Meandering through the maize (and blue): From point guard to starting quarterback

By Michael Rothstein

Late this spring, former Duke point guard Greg Paulus visited Michigan and considered heading to Ann Arbor to join the Wolverines as a quarterback.

Now, two weeks into spring practice, the fifth-year freshmen at quarterback was named the starter at his eventual home, Syracuse.

Reaction in this corner of the world - whoa. Yes, it gives Syracuse a much-needed jolt of excitement and energy for a program that fell into obscurity under former head coach (and current Michigan defensive coordinator) Greg Robinson. But the biggest question is this ... can he actually play?

And if he can, will Michigan regret not making sure he was on campus in Ann Arbor?

  • Look out, Creighton coach Dana Altman is borrowing offensive sets from Michigan because he likes what John Beilein does. The two teams play in November at the Old Spice in Orlando.

The Paulus situation is a win/win/win. Syracuse wins because they have a QB this year. UM wins because they don't have any controversy hindering the development of Forcier and Robinson. And Paulus wins because he gets to start. I'm happy for everyone; great call by RR.

"And if he can, will Michigan regret not making sure he was on campus in Ann Arbor?" That's an interesting sentence, given the media thought RR was crazy to give him a chance (not a starting spot). He may end up being a good QB this year, but Michigan is better served to get experience with their 2 young QBs, who have as much, or more potential compared to Paulus.
