Meandering through the maize (and blue): RIP Jasper Howard, bowl projections and 'Where The Wild Things Are'

By Michael Rothstein

Junior cornerback Jasper Howard, 20, was stabbed to death early Sunday during a fight at a homecoming dance on the Storrs, Conn., campus.

His death led to an emotional day at Connecticut, where coach Randy Edsall had to identify Howard's body and said later, emotionally and mournfully, "there is nothing in my job description that says you have to identify bodies." Connecticut said it will play West Virginia on Saturday, where Bill Stewart is already trying to figure out a way to honor Howard.

Makes you remember that there are often things more important than winning and losing a football game.

FOOTBALL:

  • Michigan didn't gain much by playing Delaware State, writes Dave Birkett of AnnArbor.com.

  • Denard Robinson took advantage of extended playing time Saturday, writes Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press.

  • Both Bruce Feldman and Mark Schlabach of ESPN have Michigan playing Clemson in the Champs Sports Bowl in their latest bowl projections.

  • To keep winning, Penn State must stick with its efficient offense, writes Wayne Staats of the Collegian.

  • Loren Tate of the News-Gazette wonders about Illinois coach Ron Zook and his job.

  • Follow Oregon coach Chip Kelly for a day, through the eyes of George Schroeder of the Eugene Register-Guard.

  • John Rohde of the Oklahoman doesn't want anyone to second-guess Sam Bradford.
  • BASKETBALL:

  • The Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy breaks down Michigan basketball.

  • Larry Bird and Magic Johnson ruled the 1980s basketball scene. Jackie MacMullan chronicled those tales.

  • The coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv was ejected during an exhibition game against the Knicks and refused to leave the court. What happened next, well, was just bizarre.

  • Gary Parrish of CBSSportsline.com says DePaul is the college basketball program on the decline.

  • OTHER SPORTS AND STUFF:
DJ AM died of an accidental overdose in August. His reality show, which helped people get over addiction, was supposed to debut in October and Allen Salkin of the New York Times wonders if he got too close to his old demons.

  • Last week's Balloon Boy saga - fake. And now authorities are pressing charges.

  • "Where the Wild Things Are" won the box office battle this weekend, cleaning up over $32 million.

Theo, What big games did richrod win at west virginia? When he had a chance to go to the national title game he laid a big egg against a pitiful pittsburgh team. I read your very delusional posts on here and the only thing i can say is thanks for making me laugh....You should be in comedy
