Michigan track teams win Mock Rock filled with skits, shenanigans and a little skin

By Angela Cesere

Skits, shenanigans and a little skin were on display at the 13th annual Mock Rock held Tuesday night at Hill Auditorium.

But some serious dancing by the men’s and women’s track teams earned the night’s best score.

Several Michigan varsity teams injected humor into their skits -- with the Wolverines’ Big Ten rivals and other Michigan teams the butt of the jokes -- at the event, which is organized by the University of Michigan Student-Athlete Advisory Council and the Letterwinners M-Club.

Quarterback Denard Robinson and other members of the football team joined forces with the Michigan volleyball team to put on a skit about a nerd in love with a popular girl.

The men’s swimming team drew one of the night’s loudest reactions when they stripped down to their Speedos and danced to Beyonce’s “All the Single Ladies.”

The track teams took home first place, however, when they earned the night’s lone perfect score with a choreographed dance routine to “Roses” by Outkast.

ESPN anchorwoman Dana Jacobson, a 1993 Michigan graduate, hosted the event.

The judges included Max Merget, a 16-year-old brain tumor survivor treated at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital; Mary Petrovich, president of the Letterwinners M Club; Laura Hoke, wife of Michigan football coach Brady Hoke; and Michigan men’s soccer coach Chaka Daley.

The event began in 1999 as a fundraiser for the Jeff Reese Endowed Scholarship fund in honor of the Michigan wrestler who died while training for a meet.

Once the scholarship was fully funded, the groups sought additional beneficiaries. This year’s proceeds will be channeled to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washtenaw County and Student-Athletes Leading Social Change.

I was at the show last night (for the first time) and I thought it was great. Taylor Lewan is quite a ham and didn't want to give up his moment on the stage. Most of the skits were quite clever and I disagreed with the judges on some of the scores. The men's rowing team deserved far higher scores.....their costumes were very original and creative. The men's soccer team was too edgy for the judges, but I thought they were great. The student athletes appeared to be having a GREAT time and the audience was appreciative.
