Dave Brandon stood alone inside Michigan Stadium Thursday night, illuminated by the new permanent lights that were installed this week.

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said he will use a freshly-minted Twitter account and blog to keep the school's fan base up to date what's going on with Michigan's athletic department

He had been seen the lights go on earlier in the day, but now, it was pitch black, leaving him under the glow of lights he maintains he could have used to read a book. Among his first thoughts: I need to tweet this.

So he took out his phone and crafted a 140-character message, which finished, "The lights are working and AWESOME!"

It was one of seven tweets Brandon sent this week after his account, @DaveBrandonAD went public this week, drawing nearly 2,000 followers.

"I'm having fun with it," Brandon said Friday night during the first intermission of Michigan's 7-2 win over Lake Superior State at Yost Ice Arena. "But I will get better and better at it as I get a little more more experienced at it."

Brandon also started a blog on Michigan's official athletic website this week. He used a blog in his previous job as the chief executive officer at Domino's Pizza to keep people outside the company aware of what was going on.

He said he will use his blog and his Twitter account to do the same in his capacity as Michigan's athletic director.

"I get to do a lot of cool things and I get to go a lot of cool places and experience some pretty remarkable things," Brandon said. "When I have one of those moments when I say, 'Wow this is cool' I am going to try and get a reflex that says, 'I should tweet this.'"

Brandon has plenty to Tweet about this week.

His week included seeing the Michigan Stadium lights installed, having the university's regents approve a fireworks display for the Big Chill at The Big House and planning the Senior Day festivities for Michigan's home football finale Saturday against Wisconsin.

Brandon said officials met for two hours Friday discussing plans for the Dec. 11 Big Chill when Michigan and Michigan State will meet in an outdoor hockey game. He said the university will have a representative from the Guinness Book of World Records to document a crowd that is expected to reach nearly 113,000.

Rink construction will begin Sunday and Brandon said the university has a camera installed inside the stadium that will create a time-lapsed video. The video will begin with Saturday's home football game and chronicle the preparations for the Big Chill event.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing," Brandon said. "I think it's going to be historic."

Expect Brandon to also pick up on his tweeting frequency. He joked about delivering his next entry from Friday's game after not having time to update his account on Friday.

"I'm literally three days into (Twitter) and so I'm still trying to set it up in such a way that I can manage it," he said.
