Michigan baseball and softball teams pick up non-conference wins and more Tuesday results

The Michigan baseball team had all the runs it would need to beat Bowling Green by the end of the first inning on Tuesday night.

A two-run double by Tyler Mills capped a six-run first inning rally and the Wolverines rolled to a 13-3 non-conference win at Ray Fisher Stadium.

Designated hitter Alex Lakatos paced Michigan’s 16-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. The first three batters in the Wolverines’ batting order - Patrick Biondi, Kevin Krantz and Michael O’Neill - were a combined 6-for-13 and scored five runs.

Michigan (9-21) starter Ben Ballantine allowed five hits and three runs through three innings before relievers Kevin Vangheluwe and Matt Gerbe blanked the Falcons (11-17) the rest of the way. (Boxscore)

MORE BASEBALL Eastern Michigan 7, Cleveland State 2 (10 inn.): The Eagles rallied for five runs in the top of the tenth inning on three hits, three walks and a hit batter. The top four batters in the Eastern lineup went 7-for-16 at the plate and Brian Valente picked up the win with 3 2/3 innings of no-hit relief. (Details)

SOFTBALL Michigan 6, Western Michigan 1: Nicole Sappingfield and Ashley Lane each had three of the Wolverines’ 10 hits in a non-conference win at Alumni Field. Amanda Chidester drove in two runs, giving her 16 RBIs over Michigan’s last six games. Sophomore Stephanie Speierman picked up the win after allowing four hits and an unearned run through five innings. (Details)

Oakland 6-2, Eastern Michigan 1-10: A three-run home run by Allison Scherer in the second game helped Eastern salvage a non-conference doubleheader split. The Eagles out-hit Oakland 5-4 in the first game, but a grand slam by the Grizzlies’ Kylie Schalz was the game-winner. (Details)
