Michigan football's RB coach Fred Jackson has bevy of candidates; Big Ten spring practice more intriguing than usual and more

By Kaleb Roedel

Fred Jackson has plenty to work with as running back coach for the Michigan football team.

The Wolverines return Michael Shaw, Vincent Smith, Fitz Toussaint, Stephen Hopkins and Mike Cox. Adding to the mix are 2011 recruits Thomas Rawls and Justice Hayes.

With head coach Brady Hoke and offensive coordinator Al Borges bringing back the pro-style offense to the Wolverines, Jackson is grinning a little wider, writes Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press.

In 2011, Rich Rodriguez escaped from Schembechler Hall. All they found of him was some donated Michigan clothes, a bar of soap, and an old defensive playbook, damn near worn down to the nub and unreadable. I remember thinking it would take a man six hundred years to screw up Michigan football enough to get fired. Old Rich Rod did it in less than three. Oh, Rod loved making excuses. I imagine it appealed to his meticulous nature. A 'we are young' here, 'the cupboard was bare' there. Excuse Making is the result of pressure and time. That's all it takes for a coach to fail really, pressure, and time. That, and a 0-6 vs. your top two rivals. Like I said, as a failed coach in Schembechler Hall, a man will do most anything to keep his mind occupied. Turns out Rich's favorite hobby was totin' his wall out into the Big House, a handful at a time. I guess after The Gator Bowl disaster, Rich decided he'd been here just about long enough. Rich did like he was told, buffed that Groban CD to a high mirror shine. Brandon simply didn't notice. Neither did I... I mean, seriously, how often do you really listen to a Josh Groban CD? Rich Rod crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of Buckeye smelling foulness I can't even imagine, or maybe I just don't want to. Five hundred yards... that's the length of five football fields, just shy of half a mile. Remember....Hoke (like Michigan Football)...is a good thing.. Maybe the BEST of THINGS....and No Good Thing Ever Dies. This is Michigan. Go Blue!

I'm with you D21. I take a lot of crap from some, try to return fire. poof, I'm gone. There might be a little resistance to change and sometimes the truth hurts. Plus it appears I'm one of the posters who can't alway even get something in or it has to be 100 words or less. I love the way the last 4 weeks have gone and I'm looking forward to seeing DRob survive 60 minutes of football every week. And running backs running, hard and defensive players tackling, hard. All the Best TiM Go Blue!

A comment that refused to violate AnnArbor.com's conversation guidelines was roundly applauded. 1st Down, Yes! Hoke Is It!

The best MIchigan can hope for is to have so many good backs that they have the luxury of redshirting both Rawls and Hayes. As for Forcier and Miami, I think it's fifty-fifty whether the Dade/Broward clique freezes him out like they did Robert Marve. It looks like the new coach is trying to diminish its importance and make Miami one team again, but that clique has been running things in Miami for a few years now. Usually, if you are from north of around Palm Beach, you don't "fit in." I wish him well, but I think his ego is writing a check that his body won't be able to cash.

Many titles our new leader Hoke will bring, by doing the opposite of Theo's king. Many TD passes our QB will sling, and to watch our great D will be a beautiful thing. Speed will play a part in the winning, but toughness & good coaching will give us the championship ring. Soon poor ol Theo will be following his king, to cheer for his speedy smurf team at D3 Lycoming.

We'll razzle and dazzle, we'll make opposition gulp... We'll blaze on past 'em, we'll beat 'em to a pulp... We'll take the titles and the crystals, we will indeed... But only with craftiness, wizardry, and DEFENSE... For Hoke has laughed at whatshisname's mistakes... He knows a slumbering 3-3-5 is a VERY BAD thing... Note to everyone: Please memorize all postings by Theo212 and be ready to recite them over the microphone at the Spring Game.

What we really need is Tommy Lee Jones to give that "neuralyzer" treatment to every one of us including Theo to forget the days of the cement-headed whatshisname and his grotesque underachievement. Not sure it was him, but I thought I saw whatshisname outside hawking bootlegged Groban CD's on the corner of S Main and W Stadium Blvd the other day.

Theo and Tommy Lee Jones, We shall be sure to make no bones.... No cement foot QB will run on Hoke's ground, Only fleet footed past 'D' via way to touchdown.... The Big Blue Machine will speed on down the field, And many a touchdown opposing D's will have to yield.....

It's a shame a rematch between Wisconsin and TCU was halted because Wisconsin would only have the rematch take place at home in Madison. Wisconsin is the team with something to prove, therefore, a rematch should take place in Texas. Wisconsin could at least agree to a home-and-home, something that TCU would accept. They are showing TCU no respect. I hope we'll see the Big Ten teams taking to the road to play big teams more and more in the future. The Big Ten's credibility has taken a major hit. It's only going to take it back by winning big non-conference games on the road.

"...top pro-style QB"???!!! Oh good heavens let's not revisit that. What we really need is Tommy Lee Jones to give most of you that "neuralyzer" treatment to forget the days of the cement-footed QB and grotesque underachievement. (And give Hoke and Borges a dose while he's at it). DB, are you reading any of this? Not sure it was him, but I thought I saw Borges shopping for leather helmets the other day...

The Freep's article on 2012 recruiting needs was interesting, but missed a big target from OH, def. end Chris Wormley of Toledo. He's one of the best defensive players in Ohio next year and supposedly is leaning strongly toward U-M. With all the talent in the Midwest this year, 2012 should be a great class for Michigan. Hopefully, they'll be able to find lots of really good linemen, plus a TE or two, and a top pro-style QB.
