Michigan golf struggles in first round of NCAA Championships
The Michigan men’s golf team is tied for 25th place in a 30-team field, 24 shots behind leader Georgia Tech, after the first round of the NCAA Championships.
The Wolverines’ Lion Kim shot an even-par 72 at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla., and is tied for 19th individually.
Georgia Tech shot a 5-under 283. Second-place UCLA (286) was the only other team to shoot under par. Two teams that Michigan beat in last week’s NCAA regional - Alabama (288) and Illinois (291) - are in the top five.
The Yellow Jackets’ James White shot a 5-under 67 to sit atop the individual leaderboard.
"Our guys really drove the ball well today," Georgia Tech coach Bruce Heppler told RamblinWreck.com. "They started solidly and played the last hole well. They did a good job of managing themselves and their emotions. We look forward to getting started again in the morning."
No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State, playing on its home course, is in eighth place.
Michigan’s 307 team total included scoring from Matt Thompson (74), Joey Garber (77) and Jack Schultz (84).
Tournament play continues Wednesday and Thursday. The top eight teams advance to match play, held Friday through Sunday.
