Michigan golfer Matt Thompson loses Michigan Open on 72nd hole
Hooters Tour professional Randy Hutchison of Traverse City beat University of Michigan golfer Matt Thompson on the final hole of the four-round Michigan Open Thursday at The Orchards Golf Club in Washington Township.
Thompson had birdied holes 16 and 17 to take a one-shot lead at the 94th annual tournament, but Hutchison hit a sand wedge to within 2 feet of the final hole, setting up a tournament-winning birdie. Thompson missed the green with a 7-iron and missed a 7-foot putt that would have saved par.
Hutchison, a former Michigan State golfer, won $10,000. His final birdie gave him a 2-under-par 70 for the day and a 16-under-par 272 total for the tournament.
Thompson, who was also second in the 2009 Michigan Open, missed being the first amateur to win a state Open since 1975.
“I feel like he beat me,” Thompson said. “I made bogey on the last hole, missed the green, then just missed that chip, but I shot 15-under. He just beat me. Randy's a great player. He made a great birdie there to win.”
Former Michigan player Brian Ottenweller (275), now on the mini-tour circuit, finished third and Saline High School graduate and current Eastern Michigan player Marty Jeppesen (280) shot a 66 Thursday to climb into fifth place.
Michigan sophomore Joey Garber (282) finished tied for eighth, Greenhills School junior Henry Do (285) tied for 18th and Polo Fields Golf & Country Club professional John Seltzer (288) tied for 28th.
