Michigan hockey pulls away from Bentley, 5-1, with three late goals

By AnnArbor.com Staff

After chipping away at the Bentley goal all night, the Michigan hockey team finally toppled Bently goalkeeper Kyle Rank for a flurry of late goals in a 5-1 win Friday.

The Wolverines (2-0-0), who had a 49-19 shots advantage, scored three times in the game’s final five minutes in front of 5,090 fans at Yost Ice Arena.

Those late goals by Alex Guptill, Luke Glendening and A.J. Treais created a lopsided win out of what had been a closer-than-expected game for the No. 9-ranked Wolverines.

Bentley (0-1-0) led 1-0 after one period thanks to a Brett Switzer power play goal. Michigan’s Greg Pateryn tied the score early in the second period and a David Wohlberg power play goal put the Wolverines ahead midway through the stanza.

"We did not know a lot about Bentley, but I knew they would keep the game close and that they would be a close checking team and be opportunistic and they were,” Michigan coach Red Berenson said.

“Even though I thought we had the edge in play in the first period, they got the goal they needed on the power play and then hung on there until we finally got a goal in the second period.”

Michigan turned up the intensity in the third period, tallying 23 of its 49 shots, much to the enjoyment of the Yost crowd.

"College hockey is all about momentum, if you can get something going. That is the thing about Yost Ice Arena and playing at Michigan, if we can get something going and the crowd gets into it and then the players get into it, there just seems to be another level,” Berenson said.

“It can intimidate another opponent and then the game changes and you can take over a game. We have seen that in the past and I hope we see more of it."

Rank stopped 41 of Michigan's first 43 before the Wolverines scored on three of their final six. Michigan goalkeeper Shawn Hunwick faced just three shots in the third period and finished with 19 saves.

The teams meet again at 7:35 p.m. Saturday at Yost Ice Arena.
