The Michigan hockey team didn't enjoy the same fortune as the Michigan basketball team at Madison Square Garden in New York City over the Thanksgiving holiday.

The hardwood at the center of sports universe was replaced with a sheet of ice shortly after Michigan's 71-57 victory over Kansas State in the NIT Season Tip-Off Championship on Friday for Saturday's "Frozen Apple" hockey game between Michigan and Cornell.

But the hockey playing version of the Wolverines couldn't follow up on the basketball team's success, falling 5-1 to the Big Red.

Michigan (5-7-1) outshot Cornell 27-23, but the goaltending of Andy Iles gave Michigan fits, just as it did when the Big Red (4-3-2) eliminated the Wolverines from last year's NCAA Tournament.

Trailing 3-0 in the third period, Michigan captain Mac Bennett provided Michigan's loan goal of the night. Steve Racine was credited with the loss in net for the Wolverines.

"We've been inconsistent. We have a good game where we give up one goal against then we have a bad game where we give up five. That's really our see-saw," said Michigan coach Red Berenson after the game. "I don't think anyone deliberately does that; we're just not good enough right now. We cannot out-skill or out-score our mistakes."
