By AnnArbor.com Staff

Michigan sophomore defenseman Jon Merrill was named to the All-CCHA Preseason First Team, the league announced today.

Merrill, who is from Brighton, had seven goals and 18 assists as a freshman and had two goals in The Big Chill at the Big House.

Merrill earned nine first place votes, tied for the second-most in the voting of the 11 league coaches. Coaches could not vote for their own players.

Michigan senior forward David Wohlberg was on the CCHA’s preseason second team. Wohlberg had 30 goals and 15 assists last season.

The Michigan hockey team has an exhibition game Saturday at 7:35 p.m. against the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and faces the U.S. National Development Program Under-18 team on Monday and opens the regular season Tuesday against Niagara.

Excited about the upcoming season, and I think Merrill and Wohlberg are poised for great seasons. As an aside, per Mgoblue.com, Wohlberg had 15 goals and 6 assists last year.
