Michigan hockey wins 2-1 at Ohio State, splits weekend series

By AnnArbor.com Staff

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Luke Glendening and David Wohlberg scored third period goals and the Michigan hockey team salvaged a weekend split at Ohio State with a 2-1 win Saturday night at Value City Arena.

Wohlberg scored the game winner with 5:24 left, skating around the net after a faceoff to pick up a rebound off a Louie Caporusso shot and flip it past Ohio State goalkeeper Cal Heeter.

"We were working on it all day. We like doing that play," Wohlberg said. "I lost the draw, but (Caporusso) got a shot on goal and I just kind of got around the net and got lucky."

In a scene reminiscent of Friday night's 3-2 overtime loss at Ohio State, Michigan's Ben Winnett was called for a hooking penalty in the final minute as the Buckeyes pressured with an open net.

Unlike Friday, when Ohio State scored in the final seconds to force overtime, the Wolverines successfully defended a 6-on-4 opportunity for 37 seconds.

"It's amazing how many times we've had last minute, game-tying scenarios between these two teams," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "Tonight, the last few minutes went our way."

Like it has most of the season, the second game of the weekend series was much more friendly to the No. 11 Wolverines (9-5-4, 8-3-1-0 CCHA). They improved to 7-0-2 on Saturdays.

It still took a lot of time -- and shots -- before the Wolverines were able to beat Heeter. He stopped all 15 shots he face in the first period and 16 more in the second, when the Buckeyes (6-8-1, 3-6-1-1) got on the scoreboard with an Alex Szczechura goal.

Heeter finished with 46 saves. Michigan's Bryan Hogan stopped 24 Ohio State shots.

The Wolverines snapped a three-game road winless streak.

"Obviously Michigan is going to come back. After losing to Minnesota last week and us last night you knew the kind of effort they are going to come out with," Ohio State coach Mark Osiecki said. "They played very well and put everything on net."

Michigan's next game is the much-anticipated Big Chill at the Big House, when Michigan State visits Michigan Stadium next Saturday to play in front of a world record crowd outdoors at Michigan Stadium.
