Michigan hockey team allows 5 unanswered goals in loss to Miami

By James Briggs

The Miami (Ohio) University hockey team scored five unanswered goals en route to a 5-1 win over Michigan on Saturday at Yost Ice Arena.

No. 1-ranked Miami became the first team to sweep Michigan at home in a weekend series since Northern Michigan did it in 2001. Michigan has lost three straight games to opponents ranked in the top-five.

"We're a pretty good team, but maybe we're not as good as we think we are," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "We'll find that out as the year goes on. Right now, this is a low point."

The Wolverines, who lost to Miami, 3-1, on Friday, got the start they needed. Left-winger David Wohlberg redirected a blue-line shot from defenseman Steve Kampfer for Wohlberg's first of the season, giving Michigan a 1-0 lead 10:33 into the game.

But Miami center Pat Connone tied the game 3 minute later, and the RedHawks added two goals in both the second and third periods, while holding Michigan scoreless the rest of the game.

Center Andy Miele and left-winger Reilly Smith scored goals in the second period, and left-winger Curtis McKenzie and Smith scored in the third, giving the RedHawks a four-goal advantage.

"We had a couple chances, and that was it," Berenson said. "I thought we fumbled the puck, we got jittery. The more pressure, the more you're not doing well, the more you fight it."

Senior defenseman Chris Summers, a captain, had a simpler explanation.

"We didn't show up to play," he said.

The underachievement spread from top to bottom, Berenson said.

"When I go around the locker room at the end of the game when we win, I have a hard time finding someone who didn't have a good game," Berenson said. "When we lose, I have a hard time finding someone that did have a good game, and that was the fact tonight."

Even goalie Bryan Hogan, who has been excellent this season, allowed a couple bad goals.

"His game is kind of like our team's game - it's inconsistent," Berenson said. "Our whole team is. There's maybe one or two players even close to playing at their potential. It doesn't show up every night, but it shows up against a real good team that's playing well."

Michigan will face another tough challenge next weekend when it plays a home-and-home series against Michigan State, a team that probably has overachieved so far. After struggling last year, the Spartans have remained at or near the top of the CCHA all season.

"It's going to be chippy next weekend," center Matt Rust said. "It always is against Michigan State."

Not shocked. There's something missing from this team and I don't know what it is. They seem to have the right leadership with Summers. Something is missing, maybe they need some muscle, maybe it's about getting the young guys ice time. Hoping there are answers.
