Michigan soccer loses in OT to Notre Dame; U-M, EMU volleyball win tournament openers and more

Notre Dame’s Adam Mena scored his second goal of the game on a header in the first minute of overtime on Friday, ending the Michigan men’s soccer team’s upset bid in South Bend, Ind.

"Our team played their hearts out tonight and unfortunately didn't get a favorable result,” Michigan coach Steve Burns said after the 2-1 loss. “As the stats show, both teams created good chances in an end-to-end game."

Michigan (2-5-1) took a 1-0 lead on the No. 22-ranked Fighting Irish (3-1-2) when junior Latif Alashe scored his first goal of the season just 39 seconds into the game.

Mena scored the equalizer in the 32nd minute and the game-winner in overtime.

Notre Dame held a 23-17 shots advantage, including 8-4 on goal. The Irish also held an 11-9 edge in corner kicks.

VOLLEYBALL

Michigan Adidas Invitational: The career-high 17 kills sophomore Lexi Erwin recorded against Toledo on Friday afternoon didn’t stand for long. Following a 3-1 win over the Rockets, Erwin had 18 kills in a 3-1 win over Xavier on Friday night. Alex Hunt had the second-best kill total in both games for the No. 18-ranked Wolverines, notching 16 against Toledo and 13 against Xavier. (Details)

Eastern Michigan 3, Morgan State 0: The Eagles (10-2) used a season-high .396 attack percentage to sweep its first match at the Robert Morris Holiday Inn Volleyball Classic. Paige Roback had 11 kills. (Details)

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Illinois State 3, Eastern Michigan 0: Freshman Rachel Tejada had a hat trick for Illinois State and the Eagles lost their sixth straight game, this one their home opener at Scicluna Field. (Details)

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Spartan Invitational: Eastern Michigan’s Terefe Ejigu's finished first at the 31st annual event, winning on the 8,000-meter course at Forest Akers West Golf Course in 24:23. Team scores were not kept. (Details)

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Murfield Collegiate Invitational: Eastern Michigan’s Mariya Toncheva and Nino Mebuke both won their opening singles matches in the first day of the three-day tournament. (Details)
