Michigan softball completes Tiger Classic sweep with 12-1 win against Penn State
The Michigan softball team got a little taste of Big Ten play in Baton Rouge, La., on Sunday, beating Penn State 12-1 at the Tiger Classic.
After opening the season with three one-run wins, the Wolverines’ offense strung together 10 hits in the mercy-rule shortened, five-inning win.
Stephanie Kirkpatrick had an RBI single and Amanda Chidester and Ashley Lane drew bases-loaded walks in the top of the fifth.
Chidester, who hit a walk-off home run in the Wolverines’ 5-4 win over Louisiana Tech on Saturday, hit a three-run shot off Penn State’s Jordan Wheatley in the fourth inning.
Kirkpatrick went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a stolen base for Michigan (4-0) while freshman pitcher Haylie Wagner (1-0) allowed one run on three hits and struck out 11.
Penn State’s Cassidy Bell had an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth.
The Wolverines will play five games at the Florida Atlantic Kickoff Classic in Boca Raton, Fla., next weekend.
