Michigan volleyball falls at No. 9 Penn State and more Saturday results

The Michigan volleyball team challenged No. 9-ranked Penn State in every set on Saturday night, but the four-time defending national champions can handle a challenge.

The Nittany Lions are 23-0 all-time against Michigan at their Rec Hall after a straight set (25-22, 25-21, 25-23) victory.

Michigan (15-7, 3-7 Big Ten) was ahead 22-21 in the first set and led for stretches of the third set before Penn State (15-5, 8-2) closed out a 23-23 tie with a pair of kills.

Senior Courtney Fletcher led the Wolverines with 12 kills and a season-high five digs. Lexi Erwin, Alex Hunt and Jennifer Cross had eight kills apiece.

A replay of the match will be aired on ESPN2 at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Eastern Michigan 3, Akron 0: The Eagles (19-6, 7-3 MAC) won their sixth straight match, which includes four consecutive straight-set victories. Rachel Iaquaniello (16 kills) and Paige Roback (10 kils) led Eastern. (Details)

San Diego State 2, Michigan 1: The Wolverines (5-11-1) outshot San Diego State 11-9, but didn’t get on the scoreboard until Matthew Rickard scored his first goal in the 78th minute to cut the Aztecs’ 2-0 lead in half. (Details)

Members of the Canadian National Training Center won 10 of 13 events at a non-scoring event held at Canham Natatorium. Michigan junior Miguel Ortiz won the 100 backstroke and swam a leg of the Wolverines’ winning 400 freestyle relay. Gard Kvale of Club Wolverine Elite won the 200 freestyle.
