Michigan volleyball finishes non-conference play unbeaten and more Saturday results

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Michigan volleyball team completed the non-conference portion of its schedule unbeaten with a 3-0 win over Texas A&M Saturday night at Cliff Keen Arena.

The No. 18-ranked Wolverines (12-0) got 13 kills from sophomore Lexi Erwin, who was named MVP of the Michigan Adidas Invitational. The Wolverines’ win over the Aggies completed a three-game sweep of their home-opening, two-day tournament.

It’s the fifth time during Michigan coach Mark Rosen’s tenure that the Wolverines have finished their non-conference schedule undefeated. They accomplished the feat in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

After the match, Rosen was asked about the pressure that comes with being unbeaten.

"I don't think it is an issue. I don't think that they walk around the locker room worried about where we are ranked,” Rosen told MGoBlue.com. “I thought that this weekend, I sensed that they had a little bit more pressure internally because of being at home. They want to play well here because they are playing in front of all of their friends and people they know really well. As an athlete, you always want to play your best, but there was a little more pressure there.”

Michigan begins Big Ten play with a trip through the state of Indiana next weekend. They play at Indiana on Friday and at No. 14-ranked Purdue on Saturday.

Michigan and Purdue are two of seven Big Ten teams in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. The others are No. 3 Illinois, No. 5 Penn State, No. 9 Minnesota, No. 10 Nebraska and No. 25 Ohio State.
