Michigan hockey ties Wisconsin, 4-4, in College Hockey Showcase

MADISON, Wisc. -- It seems inevitable that the Michigan hockey team will eventually play a meaningful Big Ten Conference hockey game against Wisconsin.

Until that day, the two teams bid adieu to their annual Thanksgiving weekend clash with a 4-4 tie at the Kohl Center.

A goal by Wisconsin's Jake Gardiner tied the game in the opening minute of the third period and neither team could find the game-winner through the remainder of regulation or a five-minute overtime in the 18th and final College Hockey Showcase.

Michigan (8-3-4) took a quick 2-0 lead after goals by Luke Moffatt and Carl Hagelin. Hagelin's goal at 8:17 of the first period was the Wolverines' first power play goal in 25 chances.

Sophomore Chris Brown would add a power play goal for the Wolverines, who scored on 2 of 5 extra-man opportunities.

But Wisconsin (6-6-3) had some power play success of its own, converting 3 of 6 chances, including Gardiner's first of two goals that tied the game at 3-3 at 11:31 of the second period .

Michigan goalkeeper Shawn Hunwick made 20 saves, half of them coming in the third period. Wisconsin's Brett Bennett stopped 28 shots.

The College Hockey Showdown features Central Collegiate Hockey Association teams Michigan and Michigan State facing Wisconsin and Minnesota from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Michigan State won 5-2 at Minnesota on Friday night. The Wolverines play their final College Hockey Showdown game at Mariucci Arena on Sunday (4:30 p.m., Big Ten Network) while MSU plays at Wisconsin at 9:05 p.m. Saturday night.

All four teams could be in the same league once Penn State, which announced plans earlier this year to move up to Division I hockey, gives the Big Ten Conference the six teams it needs to compete for a championship.
