Michigan women's swim team takes 6th at Big Ten Championships; Michigan softball team wins a pair and more

The No. 16-ranked Michigan women's swim team racked up 28 NCAA consideration times, 60 season-best times and three school records during its sixth-place showing at the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships, which concluded Saturday in Bloomington, Ind. Host Indiana won its third straight Big Ten title.

The Wolverines finished with 367 points during the four-day event. Finishing ahead of U-M were Purdue (385.5), Penn State (391), Ohio State (456), Minnesota (578) and champ Indiana, which ran away from the field with 821 points.

Michigan had a pair of league champions in Caitlin Duaw, who claimed the 100-yard butterfly, and the 200-yard freestyle relay team, including Duaw, Natasha Moodie, Alexa Mehesan and Deirdre Jones. The quartet of swimmers were named All-Big Ten first team. Adding a second team nod was sophomore Mattie Kukors.

Indiana finished with seven Big Ten first team members. The Hoosiers head coach Ray Looze was named Coach of the Year.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Concordia 77, Indiana Institute of Technology 66: The Cardinals trailed by three points at halftime but outscore the Institute of Technology 49-35 in the second half. Rocko Holmes led the Cardinals in scoring with 15 points. Also in double digits were Marius Williams (13), Ryan Walton (12) and Andrew Patrick (10).

BASEBALL Clemson 14, Eastern Michigan 3: Robert Wendzicki’s three-run home run in the second inning for the Eagles accounted for all the runs scored in their loss to the fourth-ranked Tigers.

SOFTBALL Michigan 4, Tulsa 3; Michigan 3, Massachusetts 0: Jordan Taylor pitched a one-hitter for the Wolverines against Massachusetts, and followed that up by picking up a save in U-M's shutout over Mass.

MEN'S TENNIS Michigan 4, Notre Dame 3: Shaun Bernstein clinched the Wolverines win with his victory at No. 3 singles. U-M won four-of-six singles matches and one-of-three in doubles.

WOMEN'S TENNIS Stanford 4, Michigan 1: The No. 8-ranked Wolverines win the doubles point but can't keep up in singles in a fall to No. 4 Stanford.

MEN'S TRACK Silverston Invitational: The Wolverins had five event winners Saturday in the event with no team scores at the U-M Indoor Track Building.

WOMEN'S TRACK Silverston Invitational: The No. 13-ranked Wolverines had two individual event winners in the regular-season finale at the U-M Indoor Track Building Saturday.

GYMNASTICS Eastern Michigan 191.500, Air Force Academy 188.175: Sarah Viltz wins the vault and nabs second in the balance beam to help the Eagles win their second straight.
