Michigan women's tennis team gets another shot at Northwestern in Sunday's Big Ten Tournament final

By AnnArbor.com Staff

It’s Michigan vs. Northwestern for the Big Ten women’s tennis tournament title. Again.

The top-seeded and host Wolverines beat Ohio State 4-0 in one semifinal Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Center and No. 2 seed Northwestern topped Illinois 4-0 to set up Sunday’s noon championship matchup.

Michigan has lost to the Wildcats in each of the last six tournament finals. The teams played each other in the last match of the regular season, with Michigan winning 6-1 on April 23.

Freshman Brooke Bolender completed Saturday’s sweep of Ohio State with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kelsey Haviland at No. 2 singles. Three in-progress matches were abandoned when the team victory was clinched. Michigan led all three.

It was Bolender’s 18th straight singles win and her 35th of the season, a new Michigan program record. The previous record of 34 was set by Sarah Cyganiak in 1995.

“As a freshman, to do the things she has done, it is amazing,” Michigan coach Ronni Bernstein told MGoBlue.com. “She is just a great competitor out there. She is always going to be in a match, which is nice to be able to count on. She has gotten a lot of wins for us this year. We are happy she is on our team."

Northwestern will be looking for its 13th straight Big Ten tournament victory on Sunday. Michigan snapped the Wildcats’ regular-season title streak at 11 last season and repeated as champion this year.
