Ohio State men's track wins The Dual; Denard Robinson first in 60-meter dash

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Ohio State won 10 of 15 events Saturday at the University of Michigan Indoor Track Building, beating Michigan 92-70. The Buckeyes reclaimed "The Dual" traveling pennant in front of an announced 1,573 fans and took a 4-3 lead in the series.

Among Michigan's five winners was football quarterback Denard Robinson, who made his much-anticipated track debut and won the 60-meter dash in his first-ever indoor meet. Robinson finished in 6.81 seconds, edging Ohio State freshman Matthew Terrell (6.92) to win the eight-man race.

"It felt really good to win that race today. I've been training very hard all week leading up to this point and I did it without really knowing what to expect," Robinson told MGoBlue.com "It was a new experience for me, but it wasn't any different than outdoor. It's still a race and it's still about being the fastest out there."

Pioneer High School graduate Peter Christmas won the 3,000-meter run for Wolverines. Other U-M winners included Carl Buchanon (60-meter hurdles), John Kipf (high jump) and Robert Peddlar (triple jump).

Ohio State's top performances came from sophomore Max Mays, who upset defending Big Ten champion Sean Pruitt of Michigan to win the weight throw, and reigning Big Ten Runner of the Week Thomas Murdaugh.

Murdaugh won the 400 dash in 47.18 seconds and anchored Ohio State's winning 4x400 relay team. The Buckeyes finished that race in 3:15, a Dual meet record and more than five seconds faster than Michigan.

"This is the greatest rivalry in sports and I am very proud that we have a group of guys that know how to compete," Ohio State coach Robert Gary told OhioStateBuckeyes.com. "I am looking forward to handing out our very special dual pins [given to event winners] at practice next week - our guys earned them."

The teams meet again April 10 in Columbus.
