Pioneer can't slow down powerful Canton ground game in 60-24 playoff loss

There wasn't much for Pioneer's Mark Hugan, or his teammates, to smile about during their 60-24 loss to Canton on Friday night. (Lon Horwedel | AnnArbor.com)
What the Pioneer coach didn't anticipate heading into Friday night's Division 1 district championship test, though, was for Canton's deceptive, multi-faceted running game to be nearly flawless.
But if perfection was the goal, the Chiefs certainly didn't miss the mark by much.
Canton scored on its first nine possessions - including eight times on the ground - overpowering Pioneer, 60-24, and bringing the Pioneers' post-season run to a sudden stop. (Rest of the story & photo gallery | Boxscore)

The coaches and players should be very proud of their season. The team had much heart this year, they were behind more than once and came back to beat some really good teams. They went one more step into the MHSAA playoffs than last year. Pioneer has had two playoff appearances in the three years of Coach Golds tenure. This team also beat Chelsea for the first time since they started playing them. Good luck to the seniors on the team. It's been a good ride! Can't wait till next year!

Tough loss, but Pioneer had a great season. The players and staff have good reason to be proud.

A very good year for Pioneer. Pioneer opened the season with Canton for 4 or 5 years before J. Gold was coach. Canton won all those, I believe. Canton used be covered in the old AA News daily paper. KLAA is a pretty good league.
