Pioneer, Huron, Saline eye Division 1 swim championship

By Rich Rezler

What’s the best approach to win a state swimming championship?

Show up with a few elite-level individuals? Bring a bus load of impressive depth? Or is the title won somewhere in between?

Three Washtenaw County girls high school swim teams enter this weekend’s Division 1 state finals hoping a different one of those recipes for success is the right answer. And if the meet’s seeding carries through, Pioneer, Huron and Saline should all be right in the mix.

Earlier today, the MHSAA released the state finals psych sheets, which lists the competitors in every event and how those competitors are seeded based on times recorded earlier this season.

If those seeds were to hold true, the final standings at the Division 1 finals held Friday and Saturday at the Holland Aquatics Center would look something like this: 1. Holland West Ottawa 214, 2. Novi 180, 3. Pioneer 171, 4. Saline 165, 5. Bloomfield Hills Marian 130, 6. Huron 155. (Note: The psych sheet does not include diving seeds.)

How the three local teams can reach those somewhat similar totals would come from markedly different approaches.

Huron has a relatively small squad of five individual state qualifiers, but sophomore standouts Anna DeMonte and Annie Tamblyn are in a position to score a bushel of points on their own. DeMonte is the No. 1 seed in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Tamblyn is seeded No. 1 in the 50 freestyle and No. 2 in the 100 freestyle.

On the other end of the spectrum is Saline, which will head west with a contingent of 18 individuals qualified to swim in 31 races. But besides sophomore Nikki Flynn (No. 2 in 50 freestyle) and the 100 breaststroke trio of Stephanie Boyle (No. 4), Christina Czyrka (No. 5) and Emily Lau (No. 7), the Hornets will be counting on having multiple swimmers scoring points lower in the top-16 standings.

Somewhere in the middle is the perennial powerhouse from Pioneer, which is looking for its 10th consecutive state championship.

The Pioneers might not have the multiple top-of-the-lineup power that Huron features, but senior Hanna Cowley is the No. 1 seed and defending state champion in the 100 and 200 freestyles.

And while they won’t travel as strongly as Saline, Pioneer will still bring 12 individuals qualified in 21 different events. Plus, the Pioneers are seeded No. 1 in the 400 freestyle relay and No. 2 in the 200 freestyle relay - where first-place finishes are worth twice as many points as individual wins.

Here’s a closer look at each of the local teams competing in MHSAA swimming championships this weekend. Preliminaries are held Friday with finals beginning at noon Saturday at all three locations:
