Record turnout creates competitve finals at Ann Arbor city doubles tennis tournament

By Matt Durr

Following the successful singles tournament that had a 50-percent increase in participants, the Ann Arbor city doubles tennis tournament saw a record 224 players hit the courts over the weekend.

Eleven teams claimed championships Sunday at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center, including Josh Stiles and Sven Holcombe in the men’s open flight. They defeated Ben Falk and Jay Mitchell 6-0, 6-4 to give Holcombe his second straight open flight title and the fourth in the last five years.

The men’s 7.0 division featured the most teams (19 in all), and saw No. 1 seed In-ho Lee and Juil Yum defeat the No. 3 seed Che-hung Liu and Juhchin Yang 6-3, 4-6, 1-0.

According to tournament director Helen Giordani, this year’s tournament was one the most competitive in recent memory, with many of the top seeds holding up until the final matches.

“Almost all of the seeds held up extremely well. I am very pleased with how well the seeds held out this year,” Giordani said. ”The No. 1 seeds had to battle to battle it out for the win.”

The level of competition can partially be attributed to a new approach to how players could register. Giordani and her staff allowed individuals to register for the tournament without a partner and be paired with a random player for the event.

“We were able to add 10 new teams, almost all of which made it past the first round.,” Giordani said.

As was the case with the singles tournament, the event was successful in large part due to the support of volunteers from the community.

“There is no way we would have been able to keep this tournament alive without the support of the A2 City Tournament Committee and the overwhelming number of volunteers who came to help during this event,” Giordani said.

Thanks to AAACTA for putting on such a good tournament, and thanks to Annarbor.com for covering it! It would be nice to see a photo of some of the winners in addition to the photo of the reporter.
