Registration still open for Burns Park Run on Sunday

It’s not too late to register for the Burns Park Run on Sunday, one of the longtime staples of the area running calendar.

The event has four races: The 10K and 5K runs, a 5K walk and a half-mile fun run. The $15 entry fee does not include a race T-shirt - this year’s installment is a flaming penguin (The Burns Park Elementary School logo ... trailed by flames) - or donation to any of the local beneficiaries. Registering on-line leaves these options a click away.

More than 850 runners and walkers participated last year. Jeremiah Holden captured the 10K race in 37 minutes, 9.5 seconds and Serena Kessler was the top female runner, finishing in 41 minutes, 45.8 seconds. Adam Dohm of Saline finished first in the 5K in 16 minutes, 31.3 seconds.

Started in 1979 by the Burns Park PTO as a sixth-grade camp fund raiser, the run has grown into a fundraising force, collecting on behalf of 12 area PTOs, Ann Arbor Active Against ALS, a young runner assistance program and YMCA’s Strong Kid Campaign - a new addition to this year’s race.

An added feature in recent years is the celebrity runner. This year’s honoree is former Eastern Michigan runner and national champion in cross country and 10K, Boaz Cheboiywo. Cheboiywo’s journey through life and running from his native Kenya to Ypsilanti was chronicled last year in the Running Times.
