Katie Portz has just one season of high school swimming under her belt at Skyline High School, but her coach is already putting her in the same sentence as some rare Ann Arbor swimming talent.

“I compare her to Pioneer when they were winning national titles with Kristyne Cole, Margaret Kelly, Kara Lynn Joyce,” Eagles coach Maureen Isaac said Monday, referring to the three former Pioneer state champions who all three went on to be All-Americans and Joyce to the Olympics. “She’s in that caliber of swimmer.”

Portz was among the top finishers on day one of the Washtenaw Interclub Swim Conference championships. The 15-year-old took home titles in the 200-yard freestyle, 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle events at Skyline High School.

Her 200 freestyle win came by more than seven seconds, while her 50 freestyle came by more than a second and her 100 came by three.

Portz, competing for Huron Valley Swim Club, finished second in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle at the Division 2 state meet last fall as a freshman. She will start her sophomore campaign next month.

Hundreds of swimmers age 13 and older from more than 10 clubs were at Skyline for the first day of the four-day event. Divers age 8 and under competed in the afternoon at the Racquet Club

On the boys side, the show was stolen by Kai Williams of the Georgetown Country Club and Pioneer High School. Williams set a pair of WISC records: his time of 24.75 in the 50-yard backstroke reset a 17-year-old record previously held by former Dexter great Adam Messner, and his time of 23.29 in the boys 15-17 50-yard butterfly set a four-year-old record.

Aside from Portz, two other athletes took home three individual titles. Noah Frassrand of Huron Valley won the 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 50 breastroke in the boys 13-14 division, while Amelia Armstrong-Grant of Travis Pointe won the 200 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 butterfly in the girls 13-14 division.

A pair of WISC records were also set in the 8-and-under diving portion of the competition Monday afternoon: Alec Simon of the Racquet Club scored 110 points, and Lily Witte of Dexter scored 112.55.

The WISC continues through Thursday, with the 9-10 age group swimmers competing Tuesday at Skyline starting at 9 a.m. The 11-12 age group boys and girls will compete in diving at 2 and 4 p.m. at Travis Pointe Country Club.

Wow, those are some crazy swims by 15 year old Pioneer swimmer Kai Williams. But even crazier was he only took third place in the 50 free. He got beat by Huron swimmer Will Brenner who you might know for being one of the states top divers. It looks like Brenner can out sprint even a WISC record holder.

I knew I recognized that name from somewhere. Pretty rare to see someone that good at both swimming and diving, it's usually one or the other.
