This Saturday, Wisconsin will travel to Hawaii to face the Warriors in the regular-season finale. It's probably the last time you'll see a Big Ten team traveling to the 50th state for the foreseeable future.
Ferd Lewis of the Honolulu Advertiser says that for a lot of reasons, including rising travel expenses, opponents are either not scheduling new games with Hawaii or opting out of current contracts.

I am guessing that within the next ten years, the NCAA will have a bunch of 12-team conferences playing a round robin schedule with one OOC game and a championship game for each conference. If we're lucky, the championship games will serve as playoff play-ins.

plus, the out of conference games are such a financial shot in the arm to small "directional schools" (W. Mich, E. Mich, etc)that it will probably mean that schools like UofM will stick to the most local or in-state oof matchups.

I wonder why Hawaii doesn't get its own chartered plane to go pick up opponents, bring 'em back, arrange a hotel for them, so that the costs are not appreciably higher than any other game.
