Facts about every basketball team in the Old Spice Classic field
ORLANDO, Fla. - Want to know about every team in the Old Spice Classic, which starts Thursday at noon on ESPN2 with Michigan-Creighton? Here you go.
Michigan Wolverines
Manny Harris
Michigan is led by junior guard Manny Harris and senior forward DeShawn Sims. The X-factors are freshman point guard Darius Morris and sophomore guard Zack Novak. How those two play will be a key to whether or not the Wolverines can win this tournament.
Creighton Blue Jays Coach: Dana Altman (311-161, 16th season) Record: 2-1 Conference: Missouri Valley Leading Scorer: P’Allen Stinnett, Jr., G and Darryl Ashford, Jr., F 12.7 ppg. Leading Rebounder: Wayne Runnels, Jr., F 7.3 rpg. Outlook: Creighton is one of the most known mid-major programs in the country, a consistent threat to make the NCAA tournament the entire time Altman has been in Omaha. The Blue Jays have been to the NCAA tournament seven times under Altman and are 115-4 when they shoot better than 50 percent under their long-time coach.
Creighton has balanced scoring as five players average between 10 and 12.7 points a game and Kaleb Korver (40 percent) and Ethan Wragge (57.1 percent) are the team’s best three point shooters. Creighton lacks size - no Blue Jay is taller than 6-foot-9, but they have eight players who are in the positive on the plus/minus chart (which tabulates whether a player is on the floor for points scored or points against).
Marquette Golden Eagles Coach: Buzz Williams (29-10, second season) Record: 4-0 Conference: Big East Leading Scorer: Lazar Hayward, Sr., F 17.3 ppg. Leading Rebounder: Jimmy Butler, Jr., G/F 6.8 rpg. Outlook: This year’s Marquette team will look like nothing you’ve seen in the past. Gone due to graduation are Dominic James, Wesley Matthews and Jerel McNeal, who were perhaps the most productive trio in recent memory for Marquette. The leftover, Hayward, is the key to the team. He was one of Marquette’s most physical players a year ago and has stepped into a leadership role.
Otherwise, Marquette has a bunch of new faces. David Cubillan, a reserve last year, is the starting point guard. Most of its players, including starter Darius Johnson-Odom, are in its first year of playing. They’ve blown out every team they’ve played so far, but the competition has been from the bottom of the Division I barrel.
Xavier Musketeers Coach: Chris Mack (3-0, first season) Record: 3-0 Conference: Atlantic 10 Leading Scorer: Jordan Crawford, Soph., G 21.3 ppg. Leading Rebounder: Jason Love, Sr., F/C 11.7 rpg. Outlook: The Musketeers lost their coach in the off-season, Sean Miller, to Arizona but return a talented group to be led by the former Miller assistant and Xavier standout. Crawford is the most well-known of the group, having dunked on LeBron James in a game last year. He has the game to back it up. Xavier can score, too, having put up 100-plus points in two of its first three games under Mack.
Alabama Crimson Tide Coach: Anthony Grant (2-1, first season) Record: 2-1 Conference: SEC Leading Scorer: Mikhail Torrance, Sr., G 18.3 ppg. Leading Rebounder: JaMychal Green, Soph., F, 8.7 rpg. Outlook: The Crimson Tide have a new coach in rising star Anthony Grant, who took VCU to the NCAA tournament two of the last three seasons. He’s considered one of the best young coaches in the country. His team, though, has played close games. It beat Providence by nine points in its last game but lost to an experienced Cornell team at home by four, 71-67. They aren’t the best defensively, allowing opponents to shoot 41.9 percent from the field and 34.5 percent from the three-point line. They’ve also been outrebounded by one a game while not facing extraordinarily tall teams. This is clearly a program that is rebuilding.
Baylor Bears Coach: Scott Drew (85-95, seventh season) Record: 4-0 Conference: Big 12 Leading Scorer: LaceDarius Dunn, Jr., G 25.3 ppg. Leading Rebounder: Ekpe Udoh, Jr., F 8.8 rpg. Outlook: Baylor might end up surprising people by the end of the season. They have a lot of returning talent in the backcourt in Dunn and senior guard Tweety Carter, perhaps making the best backcourt in Orlando. They are fast and both have the ability to score the ball. The two Louisiana natives have more points (2,094) than the next five returning players for the Bears. The Baylor offense runs through them.
Udoh is a name familiar to Michigan. He transferred from Ann Arbor after John Beilein’s first season and has been an inside force for Baylor. He leads the Bears in rebounding and made a buzzer-beater to knock off Hartford a couple weeks ago.
Florida State Seminoles Coach: Leonard Hamilton (134-97, eighth season) Record: 3-1 Conference: ACC Leading Scorer: Solomon Alabi, Soph., C 11.3 ppg. Leading Rebounder: Chris Singleton, Soph., F 8.5 rpg. Outlook: Toney Douglas may be gone, but Florida State still returns a bunch of size. The tallest team overall in the tournament, they are led by Alabi at 7-1 and Xavier Gibson at 6-11, who also averages 9.8 points a game. Their length will bother most teams.
The Seminoles have struggled with turnovers, committing 67 in two games and really had problems with Florida earlier this week, shooting 33.3 percent and committing 23 turnovers in the loss to the Gators.
Iona Gaels Coach: Kevin Willard (27-39, third season) Record: 3-0 Conference: MAAC Leading Scorer: Scott Machado, Soph., G 14.0 ppg. Leading Rebounder: Alejo Rodriguez, Jr., F 6.7 rpg. Outlook: This isn’t going to be an easy week for Iona. The MAAC representative - the conference is the official host of the tournament - hasn’t really played anybody this year. They’ll be able to hang in some games because of their size - sophomore center Jonathan Huffaman is 7-feet tall - but they start four freshmen or sophomores.
Despite the size, Iona is being outrebounded this season and has more turnovers per game than assists. That’s all you’d really need to know.
