Swing for a Cure raises $45,000 for diabetes research and other local briefs

The Swing for a Cure golf outing spearheaded by former Michigan football player Rich Hewlett on May 16 at the University of Michigan Golf Course raised more than $45,000 for Type 1 diabetes research.

Michigan football coach Brady Hoke, former coach Gary Moeller, former line coach Jerry Hanlon and others spoke at or participated in the event. The event, in its third year, has raised more than $155,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the University of Michigan Comprehensive Diabetes Center.

Who’s invited: High school athletes looking to prepare for fall volleyball tryouts, incoming ninth-graders welcome.
When: League runs June 7-26.

EMU football clinic for women
What: EMU football skills clinic for women
Who’s invited: All women
When: 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. June 17
Where: Rynearson Stadium
The skinny: This event will be run by EMU coach Ron English and the rest of his coaching staff to teach women basic football skills. According to EMUEagles.com, there will be more emphasis on strategy this year than the previous two years the event was held.

Michigan tennis camps
What: Wolverine summer tennis camps
Who’s invited: Camps available for different age groups
When: Junior camps run June 19-30, Adult camps run June 23-25
Where: Michigan Varsity Tennis Center
The skinny: Michigan tennis coaches Bruce Berque and Ronni Bernstein will host the different camps. The camps will focus on individual technique, tennis tactics for doubles and singles play and match play.

Speed and power camp
What: University of Michigan Speed, Power & Agility Camp
Who’s invited: Incoming middle school and high school athletes
When: 8 a.m.- 12 p.m. July 11-14
Where: Father Gabriel Richard High School
The skinny: The University of Michigan Health System Sports Medicine Program is hosting the Speed, Power & Agility Camp for all incoming high school and middle school athletes. The camp will focus on foot speed, power, agility and conditioning.

Basketball camp
What: All skills basketball camp
Who’s invited: Eight to 14-year-old children interested in basketball
When: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 20 to June 24
Where: One on One Athletic Club
The skinny: Drills, Skills and Offense Basketball is hosting a camp to help children who aren’t yet in high school improve their skills. There will also be tournament games and a dunk contest the final day of the camp. The cost is $150 per child and a T-shirt and lunch are included.

Basketball camp at Pioneer
What: Pioneer basketball school
Who’s invited: Boys and girls in grades 3-8
When: Week 1: July 20-23, Week 2: July 25-28, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. each day
Where: Pioneer High School
The skinny: Pioneer coach Rex Stanczak, his staff and Pioneer players will teach this basketball camp that focuses on shooting technique, ball handling, passing and man-to-man defense. After a lunch break each day, there will be 5-on-5 games.
