Michigan defenseman Jacob Trouba and his Team USA teammates took home a gold medal with a 3-1 win over Sweden in the World Junior finals Saturday in Ufa, Russia.

The IIHF announced shortly after the end of the game that Trouba has been named the tournament’s best defenseman. Former Michigan recruit John Gibson received top goaltender honors for Team USA.

Trouba recorded an assist on Team USA’s second goal Saturday, and finished the seven-game tournament with nine points, tied for a team high. He recorded four goals and five assists and was a plus-two rating.

After losing to USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program in a Friday night exhibition, the first time the Wolverines have ever lost to the NTDP, Michigan will face Bowling Green Tuesday night at Yost.
