Michigan basketball forward Anthony Wright becomes a father

By Michael Rothstein

Anthony Wright has been awake at all hours for two days, waiting, wondering, and anticipating.

His girlfriend, Stefanie Mitchell, was due to give birth, and 30 hours after she went into labor, Wright, a senior forward on Michigan’s basketball team, became a father.

Jordyn Wright came into the world at 7:47 p.m. on Friday, weighing 7 pounds, 4 ounces and leaving the new father a happy man and already posting a picture of his baby daughter on his Twitter account.

“Not a lot of things faze me at all,” Wright said. “But this is a new experience. I definitely cherished it, definitely cherished it.”

It was, in reality, only the beginning of his past day or so.

The 21-year-old from Fairfax, Va., missed Friday’s practice to be with Mitchell as she went through labor and underwent a C-section. After Jordyn arrived in the world, he tried to come back to Crisler Arena to pick up some practice tape a few hours later.

He went out the wrong exit of St. Joseph’s hospital and found himself locked out of the place. So he went to a window and started banging on it trying to get back in.

The guard at the door said, “Who are you?”

Wright will take it from here.

“I’m like, ‘My name’s Anthony,’” Wright said. “He’s like, ‘What does that mean?’ I’m like, ‘I play Michigan basketball.’ I was like, ‘Google me.’

“So he Google imaged me, and he was like, ‘I got you.’ And he let me in.”

When he arrived at Crisler on Saturday for Michigan’s 67-53 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff where he didn’t score but had three rebounds and an assist, he was still excited.

Earlier Saturday morning, he ran on the treadmill to get his blood going. He went into the arena early to shoot to loosen up his arms and legs. And while he said he didn’t feel exhaustion, he was still kicking himself for missing two layups.

“I probably had six hours of sleep,” Wright said. “I didn’t really feel it except for the two possessions on the missed layups. On defense, I was there. Defensively, offensively except for those two missed layups I want back.

“Other than that, it was a great experience.”

It is what it is. I hope that Anthony mans up and does the right thing...for the child. After all, that's what it's all about, isn't it? By law, a child born to unmarried parents is defined as a bastard. Man up, Anthony.
