Three-goal third period lifts No. 5-ranked Michigan hockey team to 5-2 win over No. 15 Alaska
A night after being shut out for the first time in 35 games, the Michigan hockey team had to come up with some offense.
The Wolverines got a big dose of it when it mattered most.
Michigan registered three goals in the third period - including A.J. Treais' game-winner early on - as the No. 5-ranked Wolverines pulled away from Alaska, 5-2, Saturday night at the Carlson Center.
With the win, Michigan (5-2-3, 4-1-1 CCHA) earned the split heading into next weekend's home series against Notre Dame. Both games will begin at 7:35 p.m.
Treais, who also had two assists, wasn't the only one on his line that had a big night.
Sophomore Chris Brown had three assists and freshman left-winger Luke Moffatt had a goal and an assist. Both players finished the win with a +3 rating.
"We were playing a simple game - that's what we've been trying to do," Treais said. "(Friday night) we tried to be a little cute. Today simple was genius and that's what we did."
Michigan entered the third period deadlocked at two after getting goals from Louie Caporusso, who rebounded a Kevin Lynch shot to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead just 1:25 into the game.
Moffatt took a 2-1 lead in the second period when Treais fired a shot from the right circle that went off of Moffatt's skate and into the net. Alaska tied the game at 2 on a short-handed goal before Brown and Brandon Burlon scored in the third to give Michigan a commanding 4-2 lead.
Caporusso capped the scoring on an empty-netter with 1:37 remaining. Senior goalie Bryan Hogan made his second straight start, earning the win with 17 saves.
