Michigan wrestler Kellen Russell did what he’s done all season on Thursday: he won.

Russell, competing in the 141-pound weight class at NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, won his first two matches to improve to 35-0 on the season and advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal round.

Russell, the top seed in his weight class, will face Oklahoma’s Zack Bailey (24-3), a returning All-Amercican with a fourth place finish at last year’s championships. Russell was an All-American as a sophomore in 2009 (7th), but red-shirted last season.

Unseeded Wolverine Eric Grajales (149) also advanced to the quarterfinals, knocking off the top seed in his weight class in the process. After winning his open round bout, Grajales eliminated 2009 national champion Darrion Caldwell of North Carolina State in the second round. Caldwell injured his shoulder during the match and could not continue.

None of the other six Michigan wrestlers competing advanced to the championship quarterfinals. Sean Boyle (125), Zac Stevens (133), Dan Yates (165) and Ben Apland (285) went 1-1 while Anthony Biondo (197) went 2-1.

Michigan’s Justin Zeerip (174) and Eastern Michigan’s Aaron Sulzer (157) and David Wade (285) went 0-2 and were eliminated from the tournament.

Michigan is tied for 11th place in the team standings.
