University of Michigan tennis teams host Wolverine summer camps and more upcoming events

University of Michigan coaches Bruce Berque and Ronni Bernstein will lead The Wolverine Summer Tennis camps, which run from June 13-30 and offer instruction for children and adults.

The co-ed camps focus on individual technique, tennis tactics for doubles and singles play and match play. Other teaching professionals and members of the men’s and women’s tennis teams will also offer instruction.

Different junior camps for ages 8-18 will be held from June 19-30 and the adult segment runs June 23-25.

Registration open for Ann Arbor City Tennis Tournament
Registration for all events in the 2011 Ann Arbor City Tennis Tournament is now open. The annual events, first held in 1919, kick off June 11 with the two-day mixed doubles tournament. The singles tournament is July 13-17, men’s and women’s doubles are July 29-31 and the juniors July 28-29.

During the final day of the doubles event, the AAACTA will hold a town tennis celebration that features kids’ clinics and free food. Visit AAACTA.org for more information.


RUNNING

Registration open for the 38th Dexter-Ann Arbor Run
The Ann Arbor Track Club is putting on its popular Dexter-Ann Arbor Run for the 38th year June 5 in various locations around the two cities. The event includes several runs for different levels of age and ability.

For the more serious competitors, there is a half marathon that awards cash and prizes to its top finishers. There are also 10K, 5K and kids runs. The 10K and 5K are open to walkers and joggers as well as runners. The kids run, for children 12 and under, will take place at 4 p.m. June 4 at Pioneer High School.

The half marathon begins at Creekside Intermediate School in Dexter, the 10K begins near North Main Street and Kingsley in downtown Ann Arbor and the 5K starts at Forsythe Middle School in Ann Arbor.

The costs to register are $45 for the half marathon, $35 for the 10K or 5K and $10 for the kids run before the day of the race.


FOOTBALL

Brady Hoke to lead Michigan Football Academy for Women
Michigan football coach Brady Hoke and his staff will lead the 13th annual University of Michigan Women’s Football Academy on June 11.

The academy includes drills on offense, defense, passing, blocking and kicking. The day ends with a scrimmage.

Proceeds benefit the Patient and Family Support Services Program at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. The cost is $125 per person and each participant is expected to contribute a minimum of $200 from fund-raising efforts.

EMU Football Skills Clinic for Women
Eastern Michigan football coach Ron English and his staff will teach women basic football skills at the third annual EMU Football Skills Clinic for Women.

According to EMUEagles.com, there will be more emphasis on strategy at the June 17 event than in the past. Also, the time was moved so the end of the event can take place under the lights at Rynearson Stadium. This year it starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends at about 9 p.m.

Registration is $25 per person or $15 for EMU students. The price includes a meal, a T-shirt and photo opportunities with coaches. Part of the registration money will be donated to the EMU volleyball team's “Dig Pink” fundraiser for breast cancer research. BASKETBALL

Sting girls team wins state championship
After a season with several tournament wins, the Michigan Sting eighth-grade girls basketball team won the Amateur Athletic Union State championship May 8 in Burton, Mich. The Sting defeated the Greg Grant Basketball Club in the final game and had a 5-1 record in the state tournament. Other tournaments the Sting won this season include the Spiece Gym Rats Invitational and the Michigan Girls Basketball Report Tournament.

All-skills basketball camp
Drills, Skills and Offense Basketball is holding a camp at One on One Athletic Club in Ann Arbor to help children who aren’t yet in high school improve their skills. There will be tournament games and a dunk contest the final day of the camp. The cost is $150 per child and a T-shirt and lunch each day are included. Ann Arbor A's win May Classic tournament
The Ann Arbor A’s under 13 baseball team won the May Classic tournament in Sylvania, Ohio, during the May 7-8 Mother’s Day weekend. The A’s picked up wins against teams from Adrian, Mich., and New Bedford, Ohio, before beating the Oregon (Ohio) Tigers in the championship game.

The A’s were 4-1 overall in the tournament. Team members include Stevie Kise, Michael Schuby, Ben Siller, John Kunec, John Holt, Marcus Kintz, Alex Lozon, Houston Scott, Jack Shemanski, Michael Monahan, Will Yuhas, Brian Guo and Cooper Schmunk.
