A blowout by Northwestern standards leads to below-average grades
The Northwestern basketball team wiped the floor with Michigan, 67-52, on Tuesday night in Evanston. The result is a bunch of rough grades.
Offense: Much of Michigan’s game plan seemed to center around getting DeShawn Sims the ball in the interior. Northwestern shut that off fast. From tere, the Wolverines couldn’t get anything going. They went six minutes without a point in the second half. Sims tied a season low with four points. They had as many assists (nine) as turnovers, a statistic that is becoming more of a trend than an anomaly. Michigan shot 24 percent (6-of-25) in the second half. Save for Darius Morris, who had 11 points, no Wolverine played well offensively. Grade: F
Defense: Five straight possessions Northwestern had the ball in the first half. Five times, the Wildcats shot 3-pointers. Five times, they made them. Michigan coach John Beilein said his team was out of position on four of those five shots, but it was just part of what had the Wolverines struggling. They were beat on backdoor cuts and couldn’t guard Drew Crawford for the second straight time. Northwestern shot 54.3 percent for the game, almost 12 points better than its season-average (42.6 percent). The Wildcats were 50 percent from the 3-point line, almost 14 points better than the season average (36.2 percent). No wonder Beilein thinks Northwestern is so good. Grade: D
Coaching: Much of what happened to Michigan on Tuesday can’t be attributed to Beilein. Northwestern quickly shut off the Wolverines’ best option in Big Ten play - Sims - and what the rest of the country knows is that Michigan doesn’t have the shooters to be able to play the style Beilein would like. Part of that is recruiting and part of that is what Beilein inherited when he arrived in Ann Arbor three years ago. Beilein tried to mix things up, sitting Sims for stretches to go with Zack Gibson to get a spark, but the fifth-year senior could only provide so much. Grade: C-

Udoh, fantastic freshman year, sat with Beilein, than transferred. Zack Gibson....large force inside, took over several games last year........has him sitting on the Bench instead plays the other Zack, who can't shoot. I don't believe he understands that height matters. Zack Gibson has gone backwards and you can tell his confidence was taken away. He should be starting. And the shooters are not better than last year....they look like a team that is over-coached on plays and who does not spend enough time on shooting in practice. PLAY ZACK GIBSON and start to pass to him. Have an inside-outside game and your shooters will have more time to square up!
