Bowl projections say Michigan football headed to Insight Bowl

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Michigan football fans, pack your bags for Tempe.

At least, that's where Sports Illustrated's Stewart Mandel projects the Wolverines will play in the Dec. 28 Insight Bowl against Missouri.

The Insight Bowl gets the fourth or fifth selection from the Big Ten's bowl-eligible teams.

That's a positive projection for Wolverine fans after two straight years of staying home for the holidays. Mandel also likes Michigan's season-opening opponent to have a good season.. He projects UConn winning the Big East title and playing in the Fiesta Bowl.

His other Big Ten projections:

  • Ohio State vs. Alabama in the BCS Championship game
  • Wisconsin vs. Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl
  • Michigan State vs. LSU in the Gator Bowl
  • Penn State vs. Kentucky in the Outback Bowl
  • Iowa vs. Florida in the Capital One Bowl
  • Purdue vs. UTEP in the Dallas Classic
  • Northwestern vs. Kansas State in the Texas Bowl

And with out a couple of luck breaks, we could have ended up 3-9 again. You are what your record says you are and right now, we stink and RR isn't a good coach. As for the story, honestly, I don't see what the problem is. SI predicted the finish in the B10 and saw us finishing 4th or 5th. It's not like it would take a rocket scientist after that to pick out which bowl game we'd end up in. The contracts the B10 has pretty much dictate where you end up. If you want to quibble with anything, go after what SI predicts for the Michigan's record in 2010.

Vetern team??? where... 2 sophomore QBs, an unproven JR RB and a bunch of sophomores, one GOOD Senior & JR OL, a bunch of unknowns on the D (that are upperclassmen) just because you have been there 3/4 years does not constitute you being a VETERAN, critical game experience does, and not many of the guys on the squad have that. 2011 is the breakout year, now the question is does RR last until then... no one knows yet (just being a major fan of the team I hope he does, because a transition in coaching will bring ANOTHER 2 years of struggle, depending on who leaves) live i have always commented, its only been a timultuous situation with RR because there have been on and off the field issues... if he was winning admist the violations fans wouldnt care, or if he was running a clean program but still coming up short in wins he would have been given a pass (because obviously that is what is happening with the hoops squad)... winning cures everything and remember without key turnovers, the team last year could have easily ended up 8-4 instead of 5-7 and people would have been singing his praises for having a good bounce back year.

I think 4th or 5th in the B10 and an Insight Bowl would be very disappointing. This is now a veteran team with a coach in his third year. I live in Phoenix and still don't want UM in the Insight. A successful season is 9+ regualr season wins and a New Years Day bowl.

This is so dumb I can't even believe I'm commenting on it...

Shouldn't they at least play a game or two, before guessing what bowl they may be asked to play. I get the "what will they be ranked at the start of the season", but what bowl come on.

All the Huskies have to do is win the Big East and they're in the BCS. They don't have to be undefeated since the Big East does have an automatic bid. It doesn't say anywhere in that story that Stew predicted Uconn to go undefeated. You must work for the Free Press.
