EAST LANSING - Despite a wretched shooting half and being beat up in almost every way by Michigan State in the first half, the Michigan basketball team had a chance to climb back into the game at the end of the first half.

The Wolverines cut Michigan State’s lead to 11 points, 25-14, with 2:45 remaining.

Except instead of rallying, Michigan folded. Michigan State closed the half on a 7-0 run and the Wolverines opened the second half with four consecutive turnovers.

Game over.

“There were a lot of disappointing things, but that was disappointing for us because it virtually put the game out of reach,” Michigan coach John Beilein said. “The last four minutes of the first half, it was 12 or 14. We thought we had a chance to be under 10 and we’ve been down like that before.

“Those four minutes and the last four were awful for us.”

Michigan State opened the second half on a 10-0 run.

“That’s definitely not the way we wanted to come out,” sophomore guard Zack Novak said. “Even more disappointing was the first four minutes of the second half were going to be crucial.

“It was almost like our game last week (against Minnesota) only reverse. The lead got pushed to 30 real quick and you can’t recover from something like that in a place like this.”

Michigan State won by 16 points, 64-48.

Jordan Morgan injured again The season of injury for redshirt freshman Jordan Morgan continued this week.

The Detroit native showed up in East Lansing with a sling on his left arm, the remnants of a shoulder injury in practice.

“He hurt his shoulder fairly significantly in practice two days ago,” Beilein said. “I don’t know what the plan is but there’s a very good chance of an operation.”

If Morgan needs surgery, it’d be his second surgery in a year. He had knee surgery this summer, which ended up setting him back and putting him on a redshirt track this year.

DeShawn Sims definitely going to Portsmouth On Monday, Michigan forward DeShawn Sims told AnnArbor.com he was invited to and had accepted an invitation to play in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament draft camp.

Then, on Friday, Draft Express tweeted Sims had rejected the Portsmouth offer and would not be going.

Sims rejected that notion Sunday. Emphatically.

“I am (going),” Sims said. “Somebody put that out there. Hell, yeah (I’m going). Put in there, hell, yeah.”

This and that Freshman forward Blake McLimans, who is redshirting, said he sprained his left ankle Saturday in practice. He had a left boot on the ankle during Sunday’s game and said he expects to be bootless by Monday. … Redshirt freshman Ben Cronin was back on the bench in street clothes after a spring break mission trip to New Orleans. … Freshman Josh Bartelstein was also back in warmups after being in street clothes for the last few games with an ankle issue. … Michigan State’s 16-point win was the largest win by the Spartans over Michigan since Feb. 18, 2006, when they beat the Wolverines 90-71.
