Fifty Wolverines receive academic all-Big Ten honors

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Fifty University of Michigan athletes landed on the winter academic all-Big Ten teams, the league announced Wednesday.

To be eligible for the list, athletes had to be in at least their second academic year in school and carry at least a 3.0 grade point average.

Manny Harris and Zack Novak represented the men's basketball team, while Veronica Hicks, Carmen Reynolds and Courtney Boylan represented the women's basketball team.

voice: Only because previous commenters acted like it was some big accomplishment. Go check out Ohio State's and Penn State's numbers. I suspect UM was near the bottom of the Big Ten. The insecurity these days is clearly in AA.

Good to see so many kids doing well in the classroom. Also, I find it hilarious that this news made "MetricSU" so insecure that he had to inject Michigan State into the conversation.

MSU got 56, but who's counting? Two of the five student-athletes in the Big Ten with perfect 4.0s are from MSU: one in mathematics the other in mechanical engineering. And keep in mind that MSU had 6 more than UM without even fielding a men's gymnastics team (which pads UM's number with an extra 11). Doing a little math shows that UM averages about 7 per sport while MSU averages about 9 per sport. But, hey, MSU is used to its athletes excelling in the classroom.

I won't check, but I bet this will not be in the Freep!
