Former Michigan basketball star and NBA All-Star Glen Rice into MMA

By Michael Rothstein

Catching Up With ... is a semi-regular series at AnnArbor.com where we catch up with athletes of Michigan past. If there's someone you'd like to hear from, e-mail michaelrothstein@annarbor.com

Glen Rice has been gone from Michigan for 21 years - national championship in tow. All these years later, Rice remains Michigan's career scoring leader with 2,442 points

He's also the school's career leading 3-point shooter at 48.2 percent.

Rice was at Boardwalk Hall in New Jersey last weekend to watch his son, Glen Rice Jr., play in the Legends Classic. As a bonus, he got to see his alma mater play, too.

AnnArbor.com caught up with Rice as he watched his son play Friday night.

Q: What have you been up to since you left Ann Arbor and the NBA?
Glen Rice: I own my own promotional company, mixed martial arts, MMA. It’s going on our third year. We’ve been doing a lot of shows in Miami. And outside of that, just traveling around a lot trying to follow my son, give him my support.

Q: How’d you get involved in that?
GR: I’ve got a lot of friends who train at the various gyms in Miami, and it’s always been a thing, even when the (Royce) Gracie's and (Ken) Shamrock’s were doing it. I try to get in there every now and then and do some training myself, you know. Not to scare anyone, but keep in some kind of shape. But it’s been fun. It’s been fun.

Q: Do you want to become like UFC?
GR: I want to get as high as it’ll take me. The UFC is the bread and butter of the MMA world. You always want to try and be like the best, although I don’t want to be a UFC, I want to be G-Force promotions. Hopefully, if things go right, we can be one of the elite companies.

Q: Where do you feel you are at right now?
GR: We’re just getting started, and we are definitely, in my mind, the quality of shows we put on as far as a small promotional company, we have to be ones to be reckoned with.

From your Michigan career, what stands out the most?
GR: Winning the NCAA championship, that was one of the first times Michigan had won, a history-making moment not just for Michigan but for myself as an individual player and being able to get that ring and it being the first one for Michigan. I’ll never forget that.

Do you go back to Ann Arbor much?
GR: Every year I go back, absolutely. I’ve watched Ann Arbor grow every year, every year I go back there, it’s something new. I look at the football stadium and am like ‘Wow.’ It’s like it went from being a baby to an adult now and now here they are trying to do a lot of work with Crisler Arena. Michigan is a program that’s an awesome program, and I always keep going back.

Do you go back for football games or basketball games?
GR: I go back mostly for football and in the summer when they have their camps and whatnot. During the basketball season, I haven’t an opportunity because it is when I do most of my shows. But as soon as I have a little daylight you can definitely believe I’ll be there.

Have you been back for a football game this year?
GR: I didn’t go this year, didn’t get a chance to go. But I have had an opportunity to watch these guys play and I’ll tell you what, I do love the way Mr. (Denard) Robinson brings the excitement.

Q: Did you want your son (Georgia Tech sophomore guard Glen Rice Jr.) to follow you to Michigan?
GR: I stayed out of the way. It had to be completely his choice. He wanted to play and I gave no influence, but whenever he needs some kind of inspiration or some leadership or guidance or what to do out there, I’m there for him.

Q: Do you watch Michigan basketball?
GR: When they are on TV, I watch them. I look at the team this year, they are very young, have a lot to get through this year. They started out very well in these early games, so we’ll see what happens.

IMO still the best pure shooter Michigan ever had. That '89 team was awesome.
