Former Michigan guard C.J. Lee returns to basketball program

By Michael Rothstein

He worked for Ann Arbor SPARK and on the campaign of governor-elect Rick Snyder, but C.J. Lee is heading back to basketball.

The former Michigan captain and point guard rejoined the Wolverines as their new administrative assistant on Tuesday.

Travis Conlan, another former Michigan player who returned earlier this summer in that role, has been promoted to director of basketball operations.

"I am thrilled to come back and formally be a part of the Michigan basketball program," Lee said in a statement. "This is an opportunity that I am very thankful for. I look forward to learning under Coach (John) Beilein, his staff, and the entire athletic administration. My role will allow me to learn the operations side of collegiate athletics and see the game of basketball from a different perspective."

It also completes an almost complete overhaul of Michigan's staff from last season. Just one person besides Beilein - assistant Jeff Meyer - remains in his position from the end of last season.

Beilein hired Bacari Alexander and LaVall Jordan as assistant coaches and promoted Meyer full-time to an assistant coach. They replaced the departed Jerry Dunn, John Mahoney and Mike Jackson.

Graduate manager Patrick Beilein left to become a full-time assistant at Dartmouth and was replaced by last year's senior manager, Will Vergollo. Brian Townsend, last year's director of basketball operations, was promoted within the athletic department.

So he quits Rick Snyder's campaign and joins SPARK, then endorses Snyder in a TV commercial (with his brand new SPARK title displayed), then quits SPARK days after the election... Something smells bad...
