Manny Harris

Junior guard Manny Harris who leads the Michigan basketball team and the Big Ten Conference in scoring, is suspended for today's game at Purdue for unsportsmanlike conduct in practice, U-M coach John Beilein announced today.

"Manny has made great strides both on and off the court over the last three years," Beilein said in a release. "Unfortunately he used poor judgment on Friday. It is best for Manny's future if he stays home and sits out this Purdue game. We will meet with Manny and the team again when we return to determine if he has learned enough from this suspension to rejoin the team for Tuesday's game. I am confident that this learning experience will be valuable in the future to both Manny and our basketball program."

Harris, averaging 19.2 points a game, had played in 85 consecutive games for Michigan. Michigan is at Purdue today for a 4 p.m. game that will be shown on ESPN.

As a loyal Spartan I feel for my friends frustration with their basketball woes. Remember us in football. Beilein is an honorable coach, much like Izzo. Whatever Harris did he certainly deserved it and your team will ultimately be better for it. Lucas has played with greater intensity and compassion since Izzo kicked him out of practice. Hope we have a great game this Tuesday. Go Green.

Pretty darn sad when you have to discipline your best player as if he were a 6 year old. Act like a 6 year old and get treated like a 6 year old. As that current statement goes, " It is what it is"!!!!

Thanks, Manny, way to let the team down in a time when they needed you. Poor choice, I hope you learn from it. Otherwise, today showed the lack of depth this team has. I'm worried about the recruiting for our basketball program. Do we have any star recruits coming in next year? DeShaun Sims will be gone, Manny Harris won't stick around, especially after this year's performance. No depth, it could be back to settling with NIT births each year. I don't know about each of you, but don't you get tired of seeing the same product year after year. I'm disappointed because I expected more out of this team this year. Quality win against Connecticut won't cut it, especially with how Connecticut has struggled this year. Disappointing season, NIT birth or maybe not, especially if we keep losing. I will keep supporting my team through thick and thin, it just continues to be frustrating to watch.

I remember when Tom Izzo was a little assistant and M beat MSU by 20 - 30 points nearly every game. M-Basketball was an incredible experience -- before the scandal hit. Oh, how I long for those days. Those beautiful, but distant days.

Harris, the leading scorer in the big ten on one of the worst teams in the B10 and he's not NBA material? As I said at the beginning of the season, Harris and Sims are going to regret they returned to the U this year.

I WISH we were as good as Misdemeanor State!!!! If Misdemeanor State keeps playing so good, they will be going to the final 4 again this year. I don't understand why they are so good and we continue to be so awful???? All that said, I guarantee, Izzo will be going to the Pistons next year...you heard it here...first?

I would imagine Manny is frustrated right now. This year hasn't gone as expected. He's not performing as well as he did last year, the team isn't a top-20 team as everyone had predicted. He's probably regretting his decision not to go pro. And realizing that his own performance is likely costing him a lot of money. So he's acting up a bit in practice. I think he's at a crossroads, and Beilein understands that. Beilein knows this team can't compete at Purdue right now, even with Manny. So he wants to send Manny a message. The question now is how are Manny and the team going to react. The season could collapse entirely, or the guys could put together a run that could make the team a threat in the conference tournament. It's up to the kids now. And it had better start with a good effort against Sparty next week.

This is a shame for Manny and the Wolverines. Still, it doesn't mean UM won't give Purdue a game. Someone is going to step up and score. I've delayed getting an AnnArbor.com account for a long time because the accusation of "troll" will soon be flying. But there is a certain poster who goes by the mlive names "tateriffic2," "savalotsprtn," and, most recently, "spartyno" who also posts here. I'd like some UM fans to call this poster on his childishness. He's now a hit-and-run poster on mlive, and often has the first (derogatory) post on MSU articles. Now, this poster seems to post complete non sequiters about MSU just to be able to make negative comments. For some reason, this is allowed on AnnArbor.com. Undoubtedly, by post will be removed for being "off topic."

I wish Manny would be as tough in the games with other teams as he is with his team mates in practice. When he gets to the NBA--after an extended stay in Europe, Israel and Turkey and an endless stream of ten day contracts--they're going to break his skinny ass in two. Hey, Manny!! You might be a top notch second tier player, but you need to step it up character wise to get to the next level...

there's the predictable one! you're like a timex. unfortunately your comment makes no sense -- as usual -- because tom izzo booted kalin lucas from practice in order to serve a lesson. keep up the obsession with michigan state, though, buddy. i'm sure all the fellow wolverines fans are proud to be associated with you.

This team has done nothing this whole season, It has been the Manny and Sims show. This season has been a tremendous disappointment, but by suspending Manny it could lead to light a fire up everyones butt and they could actually all step up their game. Purdue will not know what to do because they spent so much time preparing for Manny because Michigan could be more like a team because Manny has creates by himself with sometimes it screwing Michigan over. Wouldnt everyone agree that it would be a totally different team without Manny. Michigan was going to be against the odds with Manny anyways, so without him they might bring something different to the table. Beilein is a very bright coach. He will have something up his sleeve. 8 players stepping up their game minus 1 good player might equal a better team.

XTR Nothing indicates this suspension was related to "attitude" Nowhere have I read or heard a post game news conference where Beilein blamed Manny Harris for any of the games lost. You obviously either can't read or can't understand what you read, if you got that this was simply an attitude problem out of this article. It was stated he committed an "unsportsmanlike act" during practice. This would lead one to believe he may have had an issue or committed some type of action against one of his teammates during practice. Hopefully, you will learn to understand what you read in the future. I applaud Beilein for his guts to make sure no one player becomes bigger than the program

Sat, Jan 23, 2010 : 2:45 p.m.

kfeez Manny Harris did not do Mich a favor by playing for them. He was afforded a "paid" education at the UM, I would look at that as the UM doing him a "big" favor. You question if a suspension was necessary. You don't even know what the issue is that caused the suspension, so how can you even comment on the level of punishment. No one player is bigger than the program. John Beilein is a very well respected coach and he has shown to be of high character. I've watched several UM games this season and I have not seen Manny Harris play a solid 40 minute game yet. His ball handling have been suspect, in the Wisconsin game he was taking stupid shots and in most games he is non existent for the entire first half. If you think Harris is going to take the NBA by storm next year, you obviously don't follow pro basketball. His first hurdle will be to even make a roster. I applaud Beilein for not going the "superstars" get special treatment route. His approach is that all players are expected to function within the rules and structure of his program, period. I'm glad he didn't sacrifice that to simply give UM a better chance to win a basketball game.

Manny better think twice about going pro. He doesn't seem to have the maturity level for the professional game. He is no where near ready for the NBA. He needs to show he can be a high caliber Big 10 player on a consistent basis first. This is very disappointing to say the least.U of M needs some player leadership fast!

how do you figure i'm trolling, jjabilene? i said nothing disparaging about michigan athletics in any form. and no, ignatz, you DON'T get the finsk because even if you want to assume it will result in something positive down the line, it's a negative right now. btw, thanks for showing your true colors with the original shot at msu. for the record, i don't think this situation is a big deal. i'm guessing manny's going to be just fine. kalin lucas had to get booted from practice because he wasn't doing the things he needed to do as a team leader. remember, these are kids. they're growing learning. harris and lucas are great players and solid people. but like all kids, sometimes they just need a little reminder. the reason i commented is to point out how predictable *someone's* comments are. i can't specify who that someone is because my own comment will be banned, but if you're on this site regularly enough -- or if you're ever on mlive's spartans section -- you know who i'm talking about. i like to jab him from time to time, but there's no chance of me matching his obsession.

I can't believe that some of you are questioning Coach about what he's doing to discipline Mr. Harris. Have we not seen teams who recruit immature individuals and don't do enough to control their behavior? If Mr. Harris were to end up being arrested, many would be all over the coaching staff for being too soft! Mr. Harris did something by choice and now he has to reap the rewards for it. He took himself out of the game by his actions. All the players in any collegiate sport are here to get an education first and foremost. The disciplinary process is part of that education. Once they leave school, then they can feel free to act like they're not part of society. Ask Gilbert Arenas.

I can't help thinking that this suspension is part of a bigger problem that is brewing with this team. The lack of leadership and confidence has been obvious with this team all year, and while Manny and Deshawn are good players, I think they may be struggling with the leadership roles. I will be looking for a shiner on one our players today because I would bet it came to blows in order for him to get axed. My best guess is Zack Novac. That kid is scrappy

I doubt the coach would suspend someone, especially one of your best players, if it wasn't necessary. With the suspension in mind, I am sure it would be hard to keep that in house. Just because he is a good player doesn't mean he can do what he wants even if he isn't five years old. And I am happy you will be able to watch him play somewhere else next year. Do you live in China, because if he doesn't learn how to handle the ball better, he will end up there playing with Mike Griffin. Go Blue.

JB is now making Manny an excuse for losing another away game. Of course it is Manny's fault for not making the NCAA tournament. Manny's actions should be settled internally. Let him practice more. Let him run more. Let him play and show you the reasons why he has an attitude problem. Harbaugh guaranteed a win against OSU in the mid 80's. Bo was mad but instead of punishing JH he instead made Harbaugh accountable for proving what he did by winning the game - which he did. Punish Manny by making his responsible in winning the game at Purdue and not by punishing him by making him responsible for losing. JB is responsible for all the loses in the first place.

I'm not understanding why this wasn't kept in house; and was a suspension really necessary? Manny has good character and is one of the best players in the country; who I think did Michigan a BIG favor by even deciding to play there. I don't see how suspending him and "letting him think about it" is teaching him a lesson; Manny isn't 5 years old... Fortunately I'll get to see Manny play(next season) on the next level with guys of equal talent and for a coach who will appreciate what he brings to the table.

Manny needs a wake up call. To say he has been underachieving is to put it mildly. If he thinks he is ready for the pro's then he is mistaken. There is a lot of growing up for him to do on and off the court. The team has needed a leader all year, and Manny hasn't stepped up. So far this year his ball handling skills have been average at best. His passing skills, and defense have left a lot to be desired as well.

Mr. Harris has been presented with a valuble lesson, should he elect to gain from it. Given the nurturing nature of the University and the apparently fine guidence he receives from his coach, I've no doubt he'll be on the straight and narrow the rest of the way. 1996pa, is that positive enough to have you part with your finsky? You can leave it under the big rock at the corner of Hill and Washtenaw. :-) Please don't give it to an MSU player to run the errand for you. That is, if he didn't rob you first.

It means Beilein has two players who felt they did Michigan a favor by returning, they want special treatment and they are frustrated with lack of support from the rest of the team. Harris carried the team early in the season, now Sims is starting to play well. It will be sad to see today's game - a preview of the lean years to come.
