Michigan basketball commit Trey Burke named Mr. Basketball in Ohio

By Michael Rothstein

All season long, Michigan basketball coach John Beilein said his incoming recruits will give the Wolverines more speed, athleticism and more players to handle the ball in the backcourt.

One of them, Columbus Northland point guard Trey Burke, also will come in with some accolades.

Burke was named Mr. Basketball in Ohio on Wednesday, the second straight year a player from his school was given the honor by the Associated Press.

Last year, his best friend, Ohio Stae freshman Jared Sullinger was named Mr. Basketball.

According to the story, Burke has been averaging 23.6 points, 6.8 assists and 3.1 rebounds this year.

I'm not worried about the kid's talent level, I just think it's odd that he's Mr. Basketball in a populous state, but none of the major recruiting sites have seen fit to give him any more than three stars. And how come there's no reply button for replies?

@Satch: Scout.com gives out less than 100 4-star and 5-star rankings. Only one senior player in the state of Ohio (Florida State-bound Aaron Thomas of Cincinnati) has a 4-star rating (no 5-stars). Michigan has two 4-star players in Country Day's Amir Williams (Ohio State) and Southfield's Carlton Brundidge (Michigan). Thanks to its college prep academies, Virginia has the most 4- and/or 5-star players with 11. North Carolina has 10, Illinois 9 and Texas 8. As for the reply button ... sorry you're having trouble with that. Obviously it's working for me, because I just hit Reply on your post. What browser are you using? I'll pass along your problems to our tech team.

Don't get caught up on Star ratings. Hardaway Jr. was only a 3 star and he's the bomb.

XTR, I agree with you, other than the fact Sullinger is done after this year (in my opinion declaring for the NBA draft) which would still leave Michigan without any bigs

Beilein should have gotten Sullinger in 2010 as the center, then got his friend Burke as PG this year. UM needs a big post man inside like Sullinger than a PG. Darius Morris is still with the team.
