Michigan basketball point guard Trey Burke wins 5th Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor

By Nick Baumgardner

Maybe the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award hasn't been sewn up after all.

After scoring the final two buckets in the Michigan basketball team's wire-to-wire win over Ohio State on Saturday, freshman point guard Trey Burke was recognized by the conference.

Again.

Burke picked up his fifth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor of the season Monday, pulling one behind Indiana freshman forward Cody Zeller for the league-high this season.

Burke also has one more weekly nod than teammate Tim Hardaway Jr., who was named the league's freshman of the week four times a year ago.

Burke's driving layup and subsequent high-glass bank shot in the final 1:20 of regulation Saturday clinched Michigan's victory against the Buckeyes, snapping a six-game losing skid against Ohio State and keeping the Wolverines unbeaten at home this season with a 15-0 mark at Crisler Center.

The freshman from Columbus, Ohio finished the game with a team-high 17 points.

On the season, Burke is averaging 14.2 points, 4.8 assists and 3.4 rebounds. He narrowly trails Hardaway for the team scoring lead, as the sophomore wing averages 14.3 points per game.

Burke is now 11 assists shy of Michigan's single-season freshman assists record of 140, set by ex-Wolverine Gary Grant in 1984-85.

Michigan State forward Draymond Green won the Big Ten Player of the Week honor for the second straight week, averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds in wins over Wisconsin and Purdue.

Michigan (20-7, 10-4 Big Ten) returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Northwestern (8 p.m., BTN).
