Michigan basketball's Manny Harris, DeShawn Sims are free agents

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Michigan star Manny Harris skipped his senior season to chase his dream of playing in the NBA.

He'll have to do it as an undrafted player after getting snubbed Thursday night.

The guard wasn't among the 60 players drafted. He had company.

Michigan's DeShawn Sims went undrafted as did Michigan State's Raymar Morgan. Both forwards were solid as seniors last season.

The trio will likely get a chance to show what they can do for an NBA team in the summer league, but might end up playing professionally overseas.

Harris averaged 18 points, six rebounds and four assists last season. Sims scored a career-high 16.8 points and grabbed a career-best 7.6 rebounds last season. Morgan averaged 11.8 points and 5.7 rebounds over his career.

I am no pro at predicting NBA futures but I do know these kids will have to work hard every day. They will end up finding their places and do alright. At least they have a chance. I remember when I graduated from CMU way back and Dan Marley was drafted at what I though was a 6-6 undersized center from a middle of the road program. He became extremly sucessfull because he used his head. Good luck!

Of course they're free agents, have you seen Michigan Basketball lately?

Michigan basketball's Manny Harris, DeShawn Sims are free agents but I would't give up on thse two just yet. Manny was one of the best scoring guards in this years draft and Deshawn one of the best post players. They both have the knack to get their shot off down-low and play decent defense. I see both of these young gentlemen having a sucessful NBA career. They are "Diamonds-in-the-Rough" and now have something to prove to the NBA basketball world that just passed on them both. I wish nothing but the best for both young men. Cleo Pearson Maze & Blue True!!

Manny left because he was sick of being expected to carry Michigan and still losing, and he knew with Sims graduating it was going to be even worse. Can't blame him for it--it's not like Beilein's system was going to help make him any better. You can see how he basically didn't progress any from sophomore to junior season. I think it's sad that players now have to ditch Michigan for a school like Baylor to be worth anything. Udoh would have been standing right out in the cold with Harris and Sims had he stayed with us. Just praying we don't keep RR around long enough for the football program to become like this.

Manny fell victim to his "handlers" whispering in his ear that he would be drafted. Let's hope Manny does not end up like M. Cleaves working security in Flint.

Harris would be better served in Europe, where at least he would play. If he signs as a free agent, he will never get off the bench.

I'm disappointed that Sims and Harris were not selected for the draft but I think both players have a good chance as free agents to land with a good team. I think Harris made good decision not to return to U this fall because he would have had the burden of carrying a team that's probably going to finish again at the bottom of the B10. Plus, the chemistry between he and Beilien and some other players was just not good.

too bad for morgan and sims. but hopfully they can shine in the summer and get picked up. i just don't see harris doing anything in the nba. he sure must be kicking himself about now. i guess it was a good bet based on what everyone is expecting out of um basketball season, but he still must be feeling pretty dumb.

It's strange that the NBA Draft only goes 2 rounds and picks 60 players. They used to have more rounds years ago. So, not being drafted is not the end of the world. A lot of good players end up signing as free agents. I wish Manny and DeShawn well.
