Michigan forward DeShawn Sims named Big Ten Player of the Week

By Michael Rothstein

Senior forward DeShawn Sims was named the Big Ten's Player of the Week on Monday despite a 1-1 week including the Michigan basketball team's second-half collapse in a 68-62 loss to Northwestern on Sunday.

Sims, from Detroit, averaged 21 points and 7 rebounds against Penn State and Northwestern.

"He has really been very, very good. Northwestern did a good job on him defensively, really collapsed in the zone and we couldn’t get him the ball. But he’s really been very good and had a great week of practice," Michigan coach John Beilein said. "I’m pleased that he received this honor and hopefully we can build from it because we want him to finish here in his senior year in the Big Ten games left and UConn to finish strong because he deserves it."

Sims had 25 points against Penn State and then 17 points and 8 rebounds against Northwestern. It's the third time Sims has earned the Big Ten award.

"We just need more fight," Sims said of Michigan, now 8-7 overall, 2-2 in the Big Ten. "Being down a couple losses, having some losses on our record, we just have to keep fighting hard."

Michigan plays host to Indiana on Thursday (9 p.m., ESPN).
