Michigan freshman forward Evan Smotrycz

By Michael Rothstein

Evan Smotrycz is one of Michigan's four freshmen recruits who begin college this week.

From Massachusetts, Smotrycz played high school basketball at Reading High before spending two years at New Hampton Prep in New Hampshire.

Favorite movie: He Got Game. I love Jesus Shuttlesworth, love the movie, love Denzel Washington.

What's in your iPod right now: Right now I have a lot of rap and I actually don't mind a little bit of country. Someone turned me on to it.

Craziest shot you've attempted: We used to film these. Over my house, not even looking, over the back, over the house. Last year.

Biggest influence in basketball: Definitely my AAU coach, Vin Pastore.

Biggest influence in your life: My parents

Favorite basketball memory: Probably my junior year, before I repeated at Reading High, playing at the Garden. Even though we lost, it was cool to play there.

Favorite food: Steak. I'm a steak guy. Filet mignon. That is my favorite.

Like all freshmen in the Big Ten, he'll get schooled, and not on the Ann Arbor Campus. Wait until his first trip to the Kohl Center, the Brez or Mackey. The hoop will be a lot smaller.
