Michigan junior guard Manny Harris reinstated to basketball team

By Michael Rothstein

Michigan junior guard Manny Harris was reinstated to the Wolverines' basketball team after a one-game suspension, the university said in a release.

"I fully accept the suspension from the coaching staff," Harris said in a statement. "It was the correct decision. I cannot tell you my disappointment for letting my teammates down and showing the lack of leadership that I normally try to provide."

Harris leads Michigan with 19.2 points a game. In his absence, the Wolverines lost to Purdue, 69-59, on Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind..

He will be eligible for Michigan's game against Michigan State on Tuesday.

"It is our hope that Manny will show tremendous growth from his suspension," Michigan coach John Beilein said in the statement. "We look forward to moving on and to having a great practice today."

Okay, Walmart, we had "no chance of beating Purdue." You're ignorant, you know just as much as the rest of us--even less, in fact.

Nice try, 1998pa. We have a very good idea of what happened in Rather Hall because, oh yeah, they did it in front of dozens of innocent bystanders. We also know what Glenn Winston did because there is a police record and public statements from his victim. Typical convoluted logic. It reminds me of last year, when MSU fans were trying to equate what Novak did with what Winston did or what the MSU hockey players did. Nobody has any idea what Harris did, but there are MSU fans on here saying the punishment was too lenient. Let's say he did throw a punch at a teammate, there are other coaches (Tom Izzo) who had that happen and didn't suspend their player. For the life of me, I'll never understand why some MSU fans spend so much time worrying about UofM when they have such a great program to root for in East Lansing.

metric all im saying is that whatever manny did (none of us REALLY know) is dealt with. we ALL know that trannon (spur of the moment or not) punched maurice joseph with intent an no punishment was dealt. so to jump on belien for letting him back (which he said publicly he may do when he suspended him) is childish and highly hypocritical. i think that the real motivation for you guys gangin up on belien is that some of you (maybe not all of you) are worried, as you should be, about manny playing with a chip on his shoulder and a fire lit under the team. i myself dont really care what he did as long as he, and the rest of the team, have learned from it.

He was in a verbal shouting match with Beilein during practice. That is it.

You think so? What do you think is the proper punishment for "I have no idea what actually happened"? jjabilene Well, jj, that's quite an interesting question you pose there. I can't help but wonder if your thinking works for Michigan fans -- or anyone else for that matter -- condemning Mark Dantonio when they "have no idea what actually happened" with some MSU football players in Rather Hall.

I would never waste my time spreading garbage on another teams blog site. What a life some people must lead. I hope for their sake that they are adolecent, and not grown men. Wally, please tell me you are some 16 yr. old kid just messing around on the farm.

This way UM will have no excuses for the loss to MSU tomorrow.

leathercouch: I guess you're just repeating why you read in David Mayo's column, but you should be warned that Mayo doesn't really analyze situations. It seems likely that Manny has been petulant and whiny for a long time. Beilein finally got fed up and benched him for a game. With the Trannon incident, he hit Maurice Joseph in a spur-of-the-moment reaction. We never heard about incidents before or after that. Manny has been crabby for a long time, and no doubt he's been letting it show in practice. It would be nice if more UM fans who posted here would objectively analyze situations rather than posting knee-jerk responses.

The only reason it's a "public statement" is because it has to be public. If there was a way to put a guy who looked similar, wore the same jersey, and played similarly to Manny, then that's what coach would have done. However, that can't exactly happen, and it's hard to keep the fact that your best player isn't playing a secret. Simply put, Manny was suspended for the game following his incident. Whether it was Purdue, MSU, Indiana, North-West Middle Arkansas State Tech, or any other school we were playing following the incident, that's the game he would have been suspended for.

That's not handling things in-house. Beilein suspended his best player for perhaps the most challenging game on the entire schedule. That is a very public statement. The only "in-house" part of it is not explaining what Manny did to warrant a suspension. It must be pretty bad, as speculation seems to focus on assaulting a teammate or a coach. This will harm his chances in the upcoming NBA draft. I hope this isn't another case of "Manny being Manny," as the Red Sox liked to say throughout the '00s. We need his leadership, if, indeed, he is a leader.

Well, if Manny would have assulted another student to the point of hospitalization, served some time in jail and THEN John would have let him back on the team that would be sleezy. Kind of like Glen Winston.

Glad to see some MSU fans came to the "Welcome Back Manny" party! Though I think some of them came just to see if maybe (hopefully) Manny is actually injured and maybe (again, hopefully) he won't play against them. Keep hoping Sparty. Manny is back!!!

Awww heck... this will make for a good drinking game. Everytime the announcers bring up that Manny Harris was suspended, really is a good kid, just frustrated, that this served as a real distraction... blah, blah, blah... UM fans can take a shot. It should help them forget about the beating they'll take.

Yer rite Walmart, how convenient. I mean who would really sit their best player in the midst of a stretch of games such as our Woverines are finally reaching the tail end of tomorrow. I sure hope Manny isnt too rusty!

Stunner. Beilein might have planned this all along. He remembers how Manny responded last year after being benched in OT of the Iowa game. That began a good stretch for the Wolverines. Beilein knew there was almost no hope of winning at Purdue, so why not do something to shake up Manny and the team for a game they can win? And you know what? It just might work. If ZN, DS, or LLP can hit some threes, UM will win a close game. Of course, I hope those picking the spread will be right. (Should be MSU by a few.)
