Michigan basketball team plays well, earns good marks against Iowa

By Michael Rothstein

Good grades all around after the Michigan basketball team used a 59-52 victory Thursday against Iowa to advance to the second round of the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis.

Offense: Michigan shot 38 percent against Iowa, 24 percent from the 3-point line and had eight turnovers. The "C," however, is because the Michigan players admitted they let up a bit when they were up 16 points late in the game. That allowed Iowa to climb back and make it interesting. The 13 assists and balanced scoring - seven players scored - also helped. But it was far from dominant. Grade: C

Defense: Michigan smothered Iowa. The Wolverines forced shot clock violations, more turnovers (14) than assists and sent the Hawkeyes into a tailspin. Iowa never led, and much of that had to do with the way Michigan defended more than how it scored. Just a good effort. Grade: A-

Coaching: John Beilein made good defensive decisions and was smart about his players’ minutes during the game considering they are a deep team that has to play again at noon Friday against Ohio State. Managing the minutes of DeShawn Sims (30) and Zack Gibson (10) was especially smart. Increasing the rotation to eight players should help going into Friday's game. Grade: B
