Michigan sophomore guard Jordan Dumars is likely to redshirt
Jordan Dumars
Sophomore guard Jordan Dumars hasn’t played in a game since December 2009. Now, he might have to wait a little bit longer.
Michigan coach John Beilein said Monday night before his radio show that Dumars will likely redshirt the rest of this season, allowing him three more years to play.
"We're deciding right now," Beilein said. "It's probably best for him right now - because breaking into the rotation is going to be hard - to have three years left."
Beilein said as long as Dumars is still not 100-percent healthy — he's not right now — it makes sense for him to preserve the year of eligibility.
Dumars injured his knee before the season and spent the first half of the season, when he was still ineligible due to NCAA transfer rules, rehabbing.
Now eligible, he still isn’t completely there.
Dumars transferred to Michigan from South Florida midway through his freshman year. If he does end up redshirting, he will join the Wolverines' very large freshman class that includes Tim Hardaway Jr., Jon Horford, Evan Smotrycz, Jordan Morgan, Blake McLimans and Colton Christian.
Dumars, though, won’t count against scholarship numbers because he is a walk-on.
“If he’s not going to get in the lineup and play,” Beilein said. “(Redshirting) makes sense if he’s not at 100 percent.” Michael Rothstein covers Michigan basketball for AnnArbor.com.
