Michigan, Eastern Michigan women qualify for WNIT
A couple of hours after missing out on the women's NCAA tournament, the Michigan women's basketball team found out it'll have at least one more home game this season.
The Wolverines qualified for the WNIT for the second time in three years and will play Kent State in a first round game Friday in the 64-team field.
Michigan (17-13) hasn't played Kent State since 1980-81. A game time won't be announced until Tuesday.
Eastern Michigan (22-8) also qualified for the WNIT and will travel to Purdue for a game Wednesday. The Eagles were 8-21 last year.
“We are happy to be playing in the postseason and extending our season,” Michigan head coach Kevin Borseth said in a statement. “You always want the opportunity to keep playing and that’s what’s ahead of us now. We’ll get back in the gym and start preparing for our opponent.”
The postseason appearance - just the eighth in school history - is the second under Borseth. It also became more of a reality as Michigan advanced through the season and kept playing well enough to be around .500 in the Big Ten after losing 13 of its last 14 games a season ago.
"Once we started winning some games in the Big Ten, that's what made us realize we could definitely get a spot in the NCAA or NIT," sophomore guard Courtney Boylan said Monday afternoon, about six hours before the announcement of the NCAA tournament field.
Still, though, Boylan said if Michigan didn't make the NCAAs - mostly after conversation had them firmly on the bubble for much of the last two weeks - it'd be a small disappointment.
"But that doesn't mean I wouldn't be excited about playing in the NIT," Boylan said. "Because we could have a great seed in the NIT, one of the top teams in the NIT."
Starting Friday, she and the rest of Michigan will get a chance to continue its season.
